Top 25 Baseball Birthdays (according to v3)

by Vvvergeer - 105 cards (Last updated on Apr 14, 2021)

1. 1934-36 National Chicle Diamond Stars (R327) #95 Luke Appling

#25
April 2

Luke Appling - HOF - 74.4
Don Sutton - HOF - 67.0
Reggie Smith - 64.6
Tommy Bond - 60.9

Appling and Sutton are HOF. Smith was a big star for a while. And I have no idea who Bond was, except that he accumulated a big WAR.

You gotta respect Appling, even if you've never appled (sorry). A .310 career hitter with 2700+ hits, he received MVP votes in 11 seasons, finishing second twice.

Just thought this was a beautiful card, which I will never own.

2. 1971 Topps - Coins #145 Don Sutton

#25
April 2

Luke Appling - HOF - 74.4
Don Sutton - HOF - 67.0
Reggie Smith - 64.6
Tommy Bond - 60.9

Appling and Sutton are HOF. Smith was a big star for a while. And I have no idea who Bond was, except that he accumulated a big WAR.

Some say Sutton was an accumulator, but he accumulated 324 wins and 3574 strikeouts, and only accumulated a 3.24 era along the way. Top five in CY voting for five straight years.

I'm close to finishing the 1971 coin set; thought I'd include one.

3. 1968 Topps #61 Reggie Smith

#25
April 2

Luke Appling - HOF - 74.4
Don Sutton - HOF - 67.0
Reggie Smith - 64.6
Tommy Bond - 60.9

Appling and Sutton are HOF. Smith was a big star for a while. And I have no idea who Bond was, except that he accumulated a big WAR.

Smith was really good for a long time. 314 homers, 1000+ RBI. .287 career hitter, with over 2000 hits and a Gold Glove.

I went old and All-Star Rookie trophy. I've got this card.

4. 2002-09 Superior Gems 100 Years of Baseball: 1876-1976 #5 Tommy Bond

#25
April 2

Luke Appling - HOF - 74.4
Don Sutton - HOF - 67.0
Reggie Smith - 64.6
Tommy Bond - 60.9

Appling and Sutton are HOF. Smith was a big star for a while. And I have no idea who Bond was, except that he accumulated a big WAR.

Well, look at that. In the 1800s, Tommy Bond won 40 games three years in a row and finished his career with 234 wins. Worth a mention, I guess.

This is the only card of him in the database. The image is a bit shaky...

5. 1975 Topps #223 Robin Yount

#24
September 16

Robin Yount - HOF - 77.3
Tim Raines - HOF - 69.4
Orel Hershiser - 56.3

Two HOFers and another legend of the post and regular season.

Yount started young and just got better. 2 MVP awards. 3142 hits.

Going with the rookie card because I love the 75s and he doesn't share with someone else.

6. 1982 Topps #3 Tim Raines

#24
September 16

Robin Yount - HOF - 77.3
Tim Raines - HOF - 69.4
Orel Hershiser - 56.3

Two HOFers and another legend of the post and regular season.

Raines finally got into the Hall. 5th all-time in stolen bases, .294 career hitter. Yet overshadowed by Rickey.

7. 1985 Topps #493 Orel Hershiser

#24
September 16

Robin Yount - HOF - 77.3
Tim Raines - HOF - 69.4
Orel Hershiser - 56.3

Two HOFers and another legend of the post and regular season.

Hershiser isn't a Hall of Famers and shouldn't be, in my opinion. But....a Cy Young, over 200 wins, over 2000 Ks, 1988 World Series MVP. Oh, and a major league record 59 freaking scoreless innings in a row.

8. 1931 W517 #21 Jimmie Foxx

#23
October 22

Jimmie Fox - HOF - 97.0
Ichiro Suzuki - 59.3
Wilbur Wood - 50.3
Robinson Cano - 69.2

Technically only one HOFer, but Ichiro is a sure bet. Cano might have a chance someday. And Wood is actually borderline. A good haul, really.

Jimmie Foxx had 30+ home runs in 12 straight seasons and 100+ in 13. 3 MVP awards, including a triple crown. I didn't even know how great this guy was.

Browsing through the gallery, I just think this card is really cool. I'll never own a real card of his, but I've got a couple GQs.

9. 2001 Topps #726 Ichiro Suzuki

#23
October 22

Jimmie Fox - HOF - 97.0
Ichiro Suzuki - 59.3
Wilbur Wood - 50.3
Robinson Cano - 69.2

Technically only one HOFer, but Ichiro is a sure bet. Cano might have a chance someday. And Wood is actually borderline. A good haul, really.

Ichiro is a first ballot HOFer. Don't even try to argue with me. 3089 hits, MVP, ROY, .311 career avg., 10 Gold Gloves and 509 stolen bases. And that's just in American baseball, which he started at the age of 27.

Thought I'd throw on 50th anniversary card in here.

10. 1972 Topps #554 Wilbur Wood

#23
October 22

Jimmie Fox - HOF - 97.0
Ichiro Suzuki - 59.3
Wilbur Wood - 50.3
Robinson Cano - 69.2

Technically only one HOFer, but Ichiro is a sure bet. Cano might have a chance someday. And Wood is actually borderline. A good haul, really.

Wood was a 3X All-Star who won 164 games. He led the league in games pitched three years in a row, and then led the league in games started four years in a row. After being an ace reliever, he won 20 games in four straight years.

Ah, the days of cool subsets like the In Actions from 1972. I love that I have this set.

First of all great idea for a list.

Okay, 3 Hall of Famers for #1 date. Nice and I agree with that selection, but May 18th should be higher on your list with two stud HOFers in Reggie and Brooks. In my recollection no one's hit better in the off-season than Mr. October in a different era where pitching at a batter was part of the game, and 3rd base was not a place to hit when Robinson was there.

You could well be right. I debated moving that up. And I might tweak it later. Thanks for the input.

Started on it, but now you have it closed for editing. Fun list.  I assure you I will read the whole thing very soon.

Ok. First adjustment made. Moved Reggie and Brooks up a notch or two.

When I got to Musial/Griffey, I couldn't imagine how you would top that. You did.  Nice work on this list. I enjoyed it a lot.

I love that my birthday is on the list at #11.

Great list. Can't argue with your #1. Agree with the move up of Reggie & Brooks. I'm left somewhat envious of your "Haves" and now I have a bunch more cards to add to my "Wants".

Noticed around card number 60 that Halliday hasn't been made a HOF yet

Would you believe you are not the only crazy person to do a list like this?  I did almost the same exact thing.  Took me 18 months to complete it.  But I took it a step further, I looked at each date, focused on their career WAR, and put together a 25 man roster, the starting 8, a DH, 5 bench players, 5 starting pitchers, 6 relievers.  And when i was all done and looked at the spreadsheet, the best team is....drum roll please...November 26th.  This team did not crack your top 25.  Many other dates have much better top 3,4,5 players, but this team is balanced.  Check it out.
