11. 2006 Topps #142 Robinson Cano

#23
October 22

Jimmie Fox - HOF - 97.0
Ichiro Suzuki - 59.3
Wilbur Wood - 50.3
Robinson Cano - 69.2

Technically only one HOFer, but Ichiro is a sure bet. Cano might have a chance someday. And Wood is actually borderline. A good haul, really.

The Sandberg fan in me is always opposed to Second Basemen, but Cano is awfully good. At the age of 35, he has over 2400 hits and a .305 lifetime average. Picked up a couple of Gold Gloves, too.

I'd actually forgotten what the 2006s looked like. Pretty cool, actually.

12. 1978 Topps #300 Joe Morgan

#22
September 19

Duke Snider - HOF - 66.3
Joe Morgan - HOF - 100.6
Jim Abbott - 19.7
Chris Short - 28.6
Gio Gonzalez - 27.5

Snider and Morgan are a good pair of Hall of Famers. The drop off after that is significant, however, and I tried to save it with quantity. Abbott, Short and Gonzalez are all just fine players. Still squeaks into the top 25.

Morgan was the best second baseman ever. There, I said it, even though Sandberg is my favorite player. Back to back MVPs and 5 Gold Gloves and 689 stolen bases are really just the tip of the iceberg.

I just loved the all-star shield in 1978. Loved it.

13. 1951 Topps Red Backs #38 Duke Snider

#22
September 19

Duke Snider - HOF - 66.3
Joe Morgan - HOF - 100.6
Jim Abbott - 19.7
Chris Short - 28.6
Gio Gonzalez - 27.5

Duke Snider was a terror for a while. He hit 40 or more home runs in 5 consecutive seasons, but only led the league once. But he hit over 400 for his career, with a .295 average.

I'm so dumb. I knew I had his last card, But I totally forgot that I own this one as part of my 1951 Topps Red Backs set. Cool.

14. 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen #289 Gio Gonzalez

#22
September 19

Duke Snider - HOF - 66.3
Joe Morgan - HOF - 100.6
Jim Abbott - 19.7
Chris Short - 28.6
Gio Gonzalez - 27.5

I watched Gio for years in DC. Never as good as he should be. But he's got 127 career wins and once finished third in Cy Young.

Just liked the GQ on this one and wanted him as a Nat. I do collect GQ, so I've got this one.

15. 1967 Topps #395 Chris Short

September 19

Duke Snider - HOF - 66.3
Joe Morgan - HOF - 100.6
Jim Abbott - 19.7
Chris Short - 28.6
Gio Gonzalez - 27.5

Chris Short was not a superstar, but he was a 20 game winner with 135 wins and a decent WAR of 31.4.

I like the 1967s and happen to have this card.

16. 1989 Topps #573 Jim Abbott

Duke Snider - HOF - 66.3
Joe Morgan - HOF - 100.6
Jim Abbott - 19.7

Gio Gonzalez - 27.5

You must love Jim Abbott. Must. The man was missing a hand and threw a no-hitter. And he could field! Once third in the Cy Young. I don't care if he had a losing record. He had an impact on the game.

Kinda hate Draft Pick cards, but I decided to go with it, anyway.

17. 1956 Topps #10 Warren Spahn

#21
April 23

Warren Spahn - HOF - 99.9
Jim Bottomley - HOF - 35.3
Andruw Jones - 62.8
Dolph Camilli - 42.8

Spahn probably qualifies as a legendary HOFer. Bottomley is also in the Hall. Jones is gonna get some votes; probably won't make it. And Camilli was pretty darn good. Having a better third player puts this just above #22.

6th all-time in wins. 3.09 career era. Led the league in complete games 9 times. One CY.

And I actually do have this card. Pretty happy about it.

18. 1926 Spalding Champions #NNO Jim Bottomley

#21
April 23

Warren Spahn - HOF - 99.9
Jim Bottomley - HOF - 35.3
Andruw Jones - 62.8
Dolph Camilli - 42.8

Bottomly is in the Hall greatly because of his 1422 RBI and .310 career average. The MVP didn't hurt.

Just picked a cool card I don't own.

19. 1998 Topps #334 Andruw Jones

#21
April 23

Warren Spahn - HOF - 99.9
Jim Bottomley - HOF - 35.3
Andruw Jones - 62.8
Dolph Camilli - 42.8

I suspect Jones won't make it to the Hall, but his 434 HR and 10 Gold Gloves make him a legit candidate.

Not sure if I have any other 1998s in this list and, of course, I love the rookie cups.

20. 1934 Goudey (R320) #91 Dolph Camilli

#21
April 23

Warren Spahn - HOF - 99.9
Jim Bottomley - HOF - 35.3
Andruw Jones - 62.8
Dolph Camilli - 42.8

Spahn probably qualifies as a legendary HOFer. Bottomley is also in the Hall. Jones is gonna get some votes; probably won't make it. And Camilli was pretty darn good. Having a better third player puts this just above #22.

Dolph is the throw-in for this day. He hit 239 HR, had almost 1000 RBI and won an MVP award.

Thought I'd go with a '34 Goudey I don't own. I like them, but was Chuck Klein soooo big that he needed a whole set dedicated to him?

First of all great idea for a list.

Okay, 3 Hall of Famers for #1 date. Nice and I agree with that selection, but May 18th should be higher on your list with two stud HOFers in Reggie and Brooks. In my recollection no one's hit better in the off-season than Mr. October in a different era where pitching at a batter was part of the game, and 3rd base was not a place to hit when Robinson was there.

You could well be right. I debated moving that up. And I might tweak it later. Thanks for the input.

Started on it, but now you have it closed for editing. Fun list.  I assure you I will read the whole thing very soon.

Ok. First adjustment made. Moved Reggie and Brooks up a notch or two.

When I got to Musial/Griffey, I couldn't imagine how you would top that. You did.  Nice work on this list. I enjoyed it a lot.

I love that my birthday is on the list at #11.

Great list. Can't argue with your #1. Agree with the move up of Reggie & Brooks. I'm left somewhat envious of your "Haves" and now I have a bunch more cards to add to my "Wants".

Noticed around card number 60 that Halliday hasn't been made a HOF yet

Would you believe you are not the only crazy person to do a list like this?  I did almost the same exact thing.  Took me 18 months to complete it.  But I took it a step further, I looked at each date, focused on their career WAR, and put together a 25 man roster, the starting 8, a DH, 5 bench players, 5 starting pitchers, 6 relievers.  And when i was all done and looked at the spreadsheet, the best team is....drum roll please...November 26th.  This team did not crack your top 25.  Many other dates have much better top 3,4,5 players, but this team is balanced.  Check it out.
