Top 25 Baseball Birthdays (according to v3)

by Vvvergeer - 105 cards (Last updated on Apr 14, 2021)

31. 1972 Topps #764 Dusty Baker

#18
June 15

Wade Boggs - HOF - 91.4
Billy Williams - HOF - 63.7
Andy Pettitte - 60.3
Dusty Baker - 37.0
Brett Butler - 49.7
Lance Parrish - 39.5

Boggs is one of the best hitters ever. Williams is becoming a lesser known HOFer, I fear, but he was great. Pettitte is close to HOF. Dusty and Butler and Parrish are all HoVG as players, and Dusty is just outside the HOF as a manager. Quantity of stars alone ranks this day pretty high.

Dusty was a huge part of baseball, as a player and manager, whose career ended at least one year too early.

Baker had over 1000 RBI and two Silver Sluggers and a Gold Glove as a player. As a manager, he's close to Hall of Fame level, with 1863 wins and a .532 winning percentage, with three Manager of the Year Awards and an NL Pennant.

I love the '72s, and look! Dusty was skinny!

32. 1983 Topps #364 Brett Butler

Billy Williams - HOF - 63.7
Andy Pettitte - 60.3

Bulter is a .290 career hitter with 558 stolen bases and 2375 hits.

Just picked the '83, and I remember him as a Brave, mostly.

33. 1980 Topps #196 Lance Parrish

Wade Boggs - HOF - 91.4
Billy Williams - HOF - 63.7
Andy Pettitte - 60.3

This day had some quality, but lots of quantity, so I even included Parrish, who hit 324 HR and won three Gold Gloves. Not bad.

I've got a soft spot for the 1980 cards.

34. 1975 Topps #30 Bert Blyleven

#17
April 6

Bert Blyleven - HOF - 95.0
Mickey Cochrane -HOF - 52.1
Ernie Lombardi - HOF - 45.9
Red Smith - 26.9

Three HOFers is always a good start. Perhaps not A-List HOFers, but a good complement of them, nonetheless. Plus one old-timey add-on.

Blyleven's another guy accused of being an accumulator. 287 wins. 3.31 era. 3701 K's puts him 5th all-time. Three times top 4 CY votes. Accumulate enough and you've had a huge impact on the game and just maybe belong in the HOF. And he's Dutch!

I love the 1975s and he's blowing a bubble. So this was an easy card choice.

35. 1933 DeLong Gum (R333) #6 Gordon "Mickey" Cochrane

#17
April 6

Bert Blyleven - HOF - 95.0
Mickey Cochrane -HOF - 52.1
Ernie Lombardi - HOF - 45.9
Red Smith - 26.9

Three HOFers is always a good start. Perhaps not A-List HOFers, but a good complement of them, nonetheless. Plus one old-timey add-on.

Good birthday for catchers. Cochrane was a career .320 hitter with two MVP awards. Always in the top 10 catchers of all-time lists.

Just thought this was a cool old card. Don't own it, of course.

36. 1934-36 National Chicle Diamond Stars (R327) #36a Ernie Lombardi

#17
April 6

Bert Blyleven - HOF - 95.0
Mickey Cochrane -HOF - 52.1
Ernie Lombardi - HOF - 45.9
Red Smith - 26.9

Three HOFers is always a good start. Perhaps not A-List HOFers, but a good complement of them, nonetheless. Plus one old-timey add-on.

Lombardi is our lesser HOF catcher born on this day. Career .306 hitter with one MVP award. More of a top 25 all-time catcher.

37. 1914 Fatima (T222) #NNO Red Smith

#17
April 6

Bert Blyleven - HOF - 95.0
Mickey Cochrane -HOF - 52.1
Ernie Lombardi - HOF - 45.9
Red Smith - 26.9

Three HOFers is always a good start. Perhaps not A-List HOFers, but a good complement of them, nonetheless. Plus one old-timey add-on.

Our old-timey add-on, um, once led the league in doubles.

Just picked an odd-ball card I'll never own.

38. 1909-11 American Caramel (E90-1) #NNO Fred Clarke

#16
October 3

Fred Clarke - HOF - 67.9
Dave Winfield - HOF - 64.2
Dennis Eckersley - HOF - 62.4

Three HOFers, albeit "lesser" ones. Clarke actually has the highest WAR among them. I feel like Winfield is almost forgotten. He was terrifying. And Eck was a great starter and reliever.

Fred Clarke -- old-timely HOFer few know. .312 career average, with over 500 SB. 2600+ hits and 1600+ managerial wins.

Went with the oldest card of him on the DB, which I do not have.

39. 1974 Topps #456 Dave Winfield

#16
October 3

Fred Clarke - HOF - 67.9
Dave Winfield - HOF - 64.2
Dennis Eckersley - HOF - 62.4

Three HOFers, albeit "lesser" ones. Clarke actually has the highest WAR among them. I feel like Winfield is almost forgotten. He was terrifying. And Eck was a great starter and reliever.

Winfield was one of the most feared sluggers of his day, with 6 Gold Gloves, to boot. No pun intended. 18th on the RBI list, with MVP votes in 8 seasons.

I needed a '74 in here somewhere, I guess, and it's his rookie. Officially, even.

40. 1985 Topps #163 Dennis Eckersley

#16
October 3

Fred Clarke - HOF - 67.9
Dave Winfield - HOF - 64.2
Dennis Eckersley - HOF - 62.4

Three HOFers, albeit "lesser" ones. Clarke actually has the highest WAR among them. I feel like Winfield is almost forgotten. He was terrifying. And Eck was a great starter and reliever.

Remember, Eckersley was a top notch starter first. A 20-game winner who wound up with 197 career wins. THEN, 390 saves, and a Cy Young and MVP award.

He was one of the starters that came over and helped lead the Cubs to their first playoff season in my fandom. So I went with this card that reflects that memorable season.

First of all great idea for a list.

Okay, 3 Hall of Famers for #1 date. Nice and I agree with that selection, but May 18th should be higher on your list with two stud HOFers in Reggie and Brooks. In my recollection no one's hit better in the off-season than Mr. October in a different era where pitching at a batter was part of the game, and 3rd base was not a place to hit when Robinson was there.

You could well be right. I debated moving that up. And I might tweak it later. Thanks for the input.

Started on it, but now you have it closed for editing. Fun list.  I assure you I will read the whole thing very soon.

Ok. First adjustment made. Moved Reggie and Brooks up a notch or two.

When I got to Musial/Griffey, I couldn't imagine how you would top that. You did.  Nice work on this list. I enjoyed it a lot.

I love that my birthday is on the list at #11.

Great list. Can't argue with your #1. Agree with the move up of Reggie & Brooks. I'm left somewhat envious of your "Haves" and now I have a bunch more cards to add to my "Wants".

Noticed around card number 60 that Halliday hasn't been made a HOF yet

Would you believe you are not the only crazy person to do a list like this?  I did almost the same exact thing.  Took me 18 months to complete it.  But I took it a step further, I looked at each date, focused on their career WAR, and put together a 25 man roster, the starting 8, a DH, 5 bench players, 5 starting pitchers, 6 relievers.  And when i was all done and looked at the spreadsheet, the best team is....drum roll please...November 26th.  This team did not crack your top 25.  Many other dates have much better top 3,4,5 players, but this team is balanced.  Check it out.
