Top 25 Baseball Birthdays (according to v3)

by Vvvergeer - 105 cards (Last updated on Apr 14, 2021)

73. 1931 W517 #41 Rube Walberg

#9
July 27

Leo Durocher - HOF - 5.1
Biz Mackey - HOF - na
Joe Tinker - HOF - 53.1
Alex Rodriguez - 117.8
Max Scherzer - 54.5
Rube Walberg - 35.9

An interesting group. Durocher played forever, but didn't make the Hall, but he's in as a manager. Biz Mackey doesn't have real stats because of, you know, racism, but he's in the HOF, as is Joe Tinker -- he of the famous poem ("Baseball's Sad Lexicon"). ARod would be a sure-fire HOFer, but he's got some suspension issues to overcome. Scherzer is getting into first ballot territory. And Rube Walberg was pretty darn good.

Rube Walberg won 155 games over a 15 year career.

I went with a W517, whatever that is. Nice old card.

74. 1970 Topps #500 Hank Aaron

#8
February 5

Henry Aaron - HOF - 143.0
Roberto Alomar - HOF - 67.1
Roger Peckinpaugh - 45.1

Aaron was one of the few absolute giants of the game who paired up with another HOFer in Alomar, and Peckinpaugh is a nice add-in.

Aaron. Obviously one of the greatest players of all time. Of course, he's still 2nd on the HR list. Did you know he's 3rd in hits? First in RBI? Did you know he stole 240 bases and won three Gold Gloves? Only one MVP award, but MVP votes in 19 straight years.

The second I got this card, I loved it. I don't really know why. Maybe because the pose is so not cliched.

75. 1995 Topps #438 Roberto Alomar

#8
February 5

Henry Aaron - HOF - 143.0
Roberto Alomar - HOF - 67.1
Roger Peckinpaugh - 45.1

Aaron was one of the few absolute giants of the game who paired up with another HOFer in Alomar, and Peckinpaugh is a nice add-in.

Alomar has more Gold Gloves than any other 2nd baseman in history, with 10 (but he still wasn't better than Sandberg). Also a .300 career hitter with 474 stolen bases.

I picked this card just for its weirdness.

76. 1914 Cracker Jack (E145) #91 Roger Peckinpaugh

#8
February 5

Henry Aaron - HOF - 143.0
Roberto Alomar - HOF - 67.1
Roger Peckinpaugh - 45.1

Aaron was one of the few absolute giants of the game who paired up with another HOFer in Alomar, and Peckinpaugh is a nice add-in.

Peckinpaugh played for 17 years, won the 1925 MVP award and won 500 games as a manager.

I picked this card, because it's beautiful. (A clearer, identical, clearly borrowed from another website "1915" is also listed.) I probably need at least one Cracker Jack card someday.

77. 1968 Topps #369 Carl Yastrzemski

#7
August 22

Carl Yastrzemski - HOF - 96.4
Paul Molitor - HOF - 75.7
Ned Hanlon - HOF - 18.1
Wally Schang - 45.0
Pat Gillick - HOF - na

Three HOFers. A fine player name Wally Schang and HOF Exec. Gillick gives this date bonus points.

Yaz was the last Triple Crown Winner for most of my life, until Cabrera. Long, wonderful career. Ninth most hits ever. That pretty much sums it up.

Not my oldest card of him, but I like the all-star cards.

78. 1981 Topps #300 Paul Molitor

#7
August 22

Carl Yastrzemski - HOF - 96.4
Paul Molitor - HOF - 75.7
Ned Hanlon - HOF - 18.1
Wally Schang - 45.0
Pat Gillick - HOF - na

Three HOFers. A fine player name Wally Schang and HOF Exec. Gillick gives this date bonus points.

Molitor has tenth most hits ever. .306 career hitter. Over 500 stolen bases. Just class and goodness.

I like the 1981 cards, and, as I've said, I love the cards where the all-star designation is on the card. So this card of mine was a good choice.

79. 1887 Buchner Gold Coin (N284) #NNO Ned Hanlon

#7
August 22

Carl Yastrzemski - HOF - 96.4
Paul Molitor - HOF - 75.7
Ned Hanlon - HOF - 18.1
Wally Schang - 45.0
Pat Gillick - HOF - na

Three HOFers. A fine player name Wally Schang and HOF Exec. Gillick gives this date bonus points.

Hanlon was a mediocre player, but a renowned manager, who is sometimes referred to as the "Father of modern baseball." Probably invented the hit and run, a strategy that baseball teams used to employ regularly before they only wanted home runs.

Don't have any 19th century cards yet, and doubt that I'll be able to afford one of these as my example. They're gorgeous.

80. 1915 Cracker Jack (E145) #58 Wally Schang

#7
August 22

Carl Yastrzemski - HOF - 96.4
Paul Molitor - HOF - 75.7
Ned Hanlon - HOF - 18.1
Wally Schang - 45.0
Pat Gillick - HOF - na

Three HOFers. A fine player name Wally Schang and HOF Exec. Gillick gives this date bonus points.

Wally Schang was the greatest offensive catcher of the deadball era and played for 18 years. He appeared in seven World Series (4 wins) and hit .300 six times.

I'd love a Cracker Jack card. Will probably start targeting one soon. This is a beautiful card.

81. 1965-22 Cooperstown Plaque Postcards #NNO Pat Gillick

#7
August 22

Carl Yastrzemski - HOF - 96.4
Paul Molitor - HOF - 75.7
Ned Hanlon - HOF - 18.1
Wally Schang - 45.0
Pat Gillick - HOF - na

Three HOFers. A fine player name Wally Schang and HOF Exec. Gillick gives this date bonus points.

Gillick is a HOF exec. Don't have, won't get this card. But it shows why he merits mention.

82. 1969 Topps #250 Frank Robinson

#6
August 31

Frank Robinson- HOF - 107.3
Eddie Plank - HOF - 91.5
Ray Dandridge - HOF - na
Tom Candiotti - 41.3

Three HOFers, and Robinson, at least, is an A-lister. And Candiotti...has a good WAR.

Frank Robinson is an A-list HOFer. Fabulous player and good and significant manager, to boot. MVP in both leagues.

My oldest card of him.

First of all great idea for a list.

Okay, 3 Hall of Famers for #1 date. Nice and I agree with that selection, but May 18th should be higher on your list with two stud HOFers in Reggie and Brooks. In my recollection no one's hit better in the off-season than Mr. October in a different era where pitching at a batter was part of the game, and 3rd base was not a place to hit when Robinson was there.

You could well be right. I debated moving that up. And I might tweak it later. Thanks for the input.

Started on it, but now you have it closed for editing. Fun list.  I assure you I will read the whole thing very soon.

Ok. First adjustment made. Moved Reggie and Brooks up a notch or two.

When I got to Musial/Griffey, I couldn't imagine how you would top that. You did.  Nice work on this list. I enjoyed it a lot.

I love that my birthday is on the list at #11.

Great list. Can't argue with your #1. Agree with the move up of Reggie & Brooks. I'm left somewhat envious of your "Haves" and now I have a bunch more cards to add to my "Wants".

Noticed around card number 60 that Halliday hasn't been made a HOF yet

Would you believe you are not the only crazy person to do a list like this?  I did almost the same exact thing.  Took me 18 months to complete it.  But I took it a step further, I looked at each date, focused on their career WAR, and put together a 25 man roster, the starting 8, a DH, 5 bench players, 5 starting pitchers, 6 relievers.  And when i was all done and looked at the spreadsheet, the best team is....drum roll please...November 26th.  This team did not crack your top 25.  Many other dates have much better top 3,4,5 players, but this team is balanced.  Check it out.
