62. 1911 Mecca Double Folders T201 #NNO Ed Walsh / Fred Payne

#10
May 14

Ed Walsh - HOF - 66.0
Tony Perez - HOF 54.0
Earle Combes - HOF - 42.5
Roy Halladay - HOF - 64.3
Denny Martinez - 49.0
Dick Howser - 9.6

Three already Hall of Famers; Halladay has a very good chance, and Martinez was really good. Dick Howser as a manager gives this date extra oomph.

Walsh has the lowest career ERA in history at 1.82. He won 195 games, including 40 in 1908. He's also 2nd all-time in WHIP.

I own one Mecca double-folder. This isn't it. But I do love them.

63. 1970 Topps #380 Tony Perez

Ed Walsh - HOF - 66.0
Tony Perez - HOF 54.0
Earle Combes - HOF - 42.5
Roy Halladay - HOF - 64.3
Denny Martinez - 49.0
Dick Howser - 9.6

Three already Hall of Famers; Halladay has a very good chance, and Martinez was really good. Dick Howser as a manager gives this date extra oomph.

Perez is a "lesser" Hall of Famers, who some don't think belongs. But he was great. MVP votes in seven seasons, 13 years apart. 31st in RBI and over 2700 hits.

I don't love the 1970 cards, but I like this one of Perez. Maybe it's the uniform.

64. 1928 W513 #86 Earle Combs

May 14

Ed Walsh - HOF - 66.0
Tony Perez - HOF 54.0
Earle Combes - HOF - 42.5
Roy Halladay - HOF - 64.3
Denny Martinez - 49.0
Dick Howser - 9.6

Three already Hall of Famers; Halladay has a very good chance, and Martinez was really good. Dick Howser as a manager gives this date extra oomph.

.325 career average is 40th all-time. And he lead the league in triples three times.

Don't think there are any other W513s on this list, and I'll never own one. But cute card.

65. 2004 Topps #714 Roy Halladay

May 14

Ed Walsh - HOF - 66.0
Tony Perez - HOF 54.0
Earle Combes - HOF - 42.5
Roy Halladay - HOF - 64.3
Denny Martinez - 49.0
Dick Howser - 9.6

Three already Hall of Famers; Halladay has a very good chance, and Martinez was really good. Dick Howser as a manager gives this date extra oomph.

I was at first opposed to him in the Hall, but the more I look, the better he seems. 2 CY Awards, and seven top-five finishes. His .659 winning percentage is 20th all-time. Led the league in IP four times and complete games seven times. I think he belongs.

I just thought this was a cool looking card. I love the award cards.

66. 1980 Topps #10 Denny Martinez

May 14

Ed Walsh - HOF - 66.0
Tony Perez - HOF 54.0
Earle Combes - HOF - 42.5
Roy Halladay - HOF - 64.3
Denny Martinez - 49.0
Dick Howser - 9.6

Three already Hall of Famers; Halladay has a very good chance, and Martinez was really good. Dick Howser as a manager gives this date extra oomph.

Martinez is in the Hall of Very Good. The guy won 245 baseball games. He's 41st all-time in innings pitched.

Good action shot on the 1980 card.

67. 1983 Topps #96 Dick Howser

May 14

Ed Walsh - HOF - 66.0
Tony Perez - HOF 54.0
Earle Combes - HOF - 42.5
Roy Halladay - HOF - 64.3
Denny Martinez - 49.0
Dick Howser - 9.6

Three already Hall of Famers; Halladay has a very good chance, and Martinez was really good. Dick Howser as a manager gives this date extra oomph.

Howser wasn't a great player, but he won 507 games as a manager, including a World Series with the Royals.

I picked this card because it's a proper manager card, with full stats on the back and everything. Alas, they have gone the way of the dodo, at least with Topps.

68. 1965-22 Cooperstown Plaque Postcards #NNO Biz Mackey

#9
July 27

Leo Durocher - HOF - 5.1
Biz Mackey - HOF - na
Joe Tinker - HOF - 53.1
Alex Rodriguez - 117.8
Max Scherzer - 54.5
Rube Walberg - 35.9

An interesting group. Durocher played forever, but didn't make the Hall, but he's in as a manager. Biz Mackey doesn't have real stats because of, you know, racism, but he's in the HOF, as is Joe Tinker -- he of the famous poem ("Baseball's Sad Lexicon"). ARod would be a sure-fire HOFer, but he's got some suspension issues to overcome. Scherzer is getting into first ballot territory. And Rube Walberg was pretty darn good.

Biz Mackey was a great catcher who regularly hit .300. Cool Papa Bell thought Mackey was the best catcher he ever saw.

Again, used the HOF postcard to give folks a better idea of his impact.

70. 1939 Play Ball #6 Leo Durocher

#9
July 27

Leo Durocher - HOF - 5.1
Biz Mackey - HOF - na
Joe Tinker - HOF - 53.1
Alex Rodriguez - 117.8
Max Scherzer - 54.5

Durocher is a legend of baseball. As a player had 1320 hits and was a three-time all-star. But he was one of those guys who was worth more than his numbers. But as a manager he won 2008 games, including a World Series.

I really wanted a card of him as a player. I think this one counts. It's my only '39 Play Ball.

71. 1998 Topps #504 Alex Rodriguez

Leo Durocher - HOF - 5.1

By the numbers, ARod is a first ballot Hall of Famer. No question. 4th on the HR list; 3rd in RBI. Over 3000 hits. 3 MVPs and 2 Gold Gloves.

The 98s were pretty classy looking, but hard to read

72. 2010 Topps #215 Max Scherzer

Leo Durocher - HOF - 5.1
Biz Mackey - HOF - na
Joe Tinker - HOF - 53.1
Alex Rodriguez - 117.8

I've had the pleasure to watch Scherzer in DC for the last few years. I am now convinced he'll be in Hall. Three CY awards, a .660 winning percentage, 159 wins, and 2449 Ks with about 7 years left in his career.

Totally forgot what the 2010 cards look like. Not bad.

First of all great idea for a list.

Okay, 3 Hall of Famers for #1 date. Nice and I agree with that selection, but May 18th should be higher on your list with two stud HOFers in Reggie and Brooks. In my recollection no one's hit better in the off-season than Mr. October in a different era where pitching at a batter was part of the game, and 3rd base was not a place to hit when Robinson was there.

You could well be right. I debated moving that up. And I might tweak it later. Thanks for the input.

Started on it, but now you have it closed for editing. Fun list.  I assure you I will read the whole thing very soon.

Ok. First adjustment made. Moved Reggie and Brooks up a notch or two.

When I got to Musial/Griffey, I couldn't imagine how you would top that. You did.  Nice work on this list. I enjoyed it a lot.

I love that my birthday is on the list at #11.

Great list. Can't argue with your #1. Agree with the move up of Reggie & Brooks. I'm left somewhat envious of your "Haves" and now I have a bunch more cards to add to my "Wants".

Noticed around card number 60 that Halliday hasn't been made a HOF yet

Would you believe you are not the only crazy person to do a list like this?  I did almost the same exact thing.  Took me 18 months to complete it.  But I took it a step further, I looked at each date, focused on their career WAR, and put together a 25 man roster, the starting 8, a DH, 5 bench players, 5 starting pitchers, 6 relievers.  And when i was all done and looked at the spreadsheet, the best team is....drum roll please...November 26th.  This team did not crack your top 25.  Many other dates have much better top 3,4,5 players, but this team is balanced.  Check it out.
