#1, I do not want to start an "open war" on this subject. I have noticed there have been an inordinate number of posts on this topic recently and within the past year. When I joined TCDB, ERRs/VARs/CORs card collecting was not very popular amonst the members at the time. Strict policies and rules were in effect. Maybe it's time to look back at ERR/VAR/COR card collecting and expand or revise the boundaries. I know of many cards that could fit a revised description but have been turned away in the past. Maybe ADMIN and L8s would be interested in opening the the "meaning of ERROR or VARIATION" cards.
Now, remember, just a thought on my part. Comments, suggestions would be interesting. Keep it civil.

I personally think TCDB is doing a very nice job on documenting true, intended variations (error fixes, changes in the type/typesetting, etc.).
I think TCDB does a fine job in NOT documenting printing flaws (blank backs, blank fronts, mismatched front/backs, missing foil, color tone variations, etc.).
I also didn't see the "inordinate number" of posts regarding err/vars that are disallowed (except for maybe the responses by a member or two).
I also don't see checklists or solid info coming into either my mailbox or the Inaccuracy Reports indicating that we're missing a whole lot of this stuff - especially for the most prolific of the posters talking about such items. So, I really am not sure what all the fuss is about.

I agree with Dan that TCDB is doing a fine job with all the intended variants (dang there are so many now days there are hardly any regular base cards anymore).
My only real problem is when the variants are included in the overall card count for the set. If a base set contains 660 cards (1-660) but has 5 cards with say a picture variant, then those extra 5 cards should not be added to the full set count. So if I do manage to get all the base cards numbered 1-660 it should show my set as 100% complete not 95% or whatever percentage those 5 cards make up of the set. Not every set collector bothers with the different variants. Years ago say 1970s and 1980s before the real collector boom started if a set had some variants few collectors actually knew about them. Very few knew of the term "uncorrected error" or even that the card makers did on occasion do a second print run to correct errors (spelling errors, stat errors, whatever errors). If the set has 660 cards in it and you have all 660 numbered cards you have the full set.

Kirk - when you come across those sets that are not totalled correctly, either drop me a note or better yet - file an IR on that set. Most of these are base sets in the Major Release category and will require Admin's edit. Thanks!

Kirk, have you looked at the new feature Admin recently added? It now shows Base set ((no VAR or ERR) and Master set (including VAR and ERR). I know the odd set is in error, but I don't think too many are till you get into the more recent years of adding SP.

No fuss, why is everything?, just my opinion. Members that don't care about these cards, don't know they exist. It's simple. Exceptions aside. Keep up the good work, just a suggestion, that's all.

It has been a while since I've noticed the count error, so I might just be recycling something that isn't much of a problem anymore. Maybe I should just shut up.

No, they still exist. We see reports now and then in the IRs about such matters. I think sometimes, members who didn't understand (or know better), just looked at the checklist, counted up the cards ane added that number as the total, instead of knowing what the total number is for. The only way we get them fixed is by those who notice this inconsistency to report it (or fix it properly themselves if they have the access to do it).
