2017 is the year I began actively collecting the NHL. I like to keep track of the first card I get of each person, and this is the easiest way for me to do that. Since so many of the people are going to be new for me, I thought it proper to create a chart just for them, plus I get to see how many new people I add to my collection in 2017. Thanks to the gifts from several friends, I begin with exactly 3000 cards in my NHL collection.

Unlike previous years, I will attempt to include ALL sets, not just the three main aspects of my collection. Since I cleared the 1000 cards mark in baseball and football in 2016, and the 3000 mark in hockey, I've got a lot of sets already and in 2016 made a chart on my blog that lists the sets- so now I have something to work off of to determine which is new or not. I began collecting the NHL full time in 2017 so the list is hockey heavy but covers a wide variety of topics spanning 128 years. The first card from each set added to my collection is the card that appears in the album. It can be any card, IE, base, parallel, insert, etc.

Colored parallels have become the norm in just about every modern baseball product. And because they are parallels, with the same card number on the back, there's really not much to get confused by. There is at least one product, however, that could cause a collector some confusion.

2012 Heritage featured a number of 'Rookie Stars' who appeared on multiple cards. I'm not going to do a comprehensive list here, but will feature three cards of former Mariner Alex Liddi, who just happened to be the first MLB player to be born and raised in Italy.

As you can see, each card features a different background color, as well as three different prospects per card (in addition to Liddi). At the very least, Topps should have used blue towards the top of card #191.

These are the last cards of sets I finished this year. For some of these, I have been trying to finish the set for years.

An additional autograph story: In 1990, during Spring Training, I asked Juan Samuel and Mike Scioscia to each sign a baseball for me. The balls had been used for batting practice and had actually been hit out of the park. My dad and I had picked up about 20-25 balls and we were giving them out to kids so they could use them for autographs too. Got to tell Juan Samuel how much we missed him being a Phillie. I got Scioscia's autograph because he's from near Philadelphia.

One of the biggest complaints I hear from fellow collectors is that Topps often recycles photos- with single photos being spread out over many different brands. This isn't a new practice, nor has Topps cornered the market on this transgression.

I recently came across these four cards of former Mariners legend Dan Wilson. The photos are not what we would call 'recycled,' but they do feature an interesting sequence of photos that seem to have been taken within a very short time of one another.

These players wound up in deals where they were returned to their original team as part of the deal that got them to their new team. If you know of others, please leave a comment or direct message me. Enjoy!

A new year brings new recycling from Topps. 2017 cards are shown first, with their older doppelgangers following. Cards from 2017 using the same picture will go by release date.

Final update for 2017. Not every set was done, but there are still plenty of examples and plenty more that I missed.

Among the number of cards I picked up at the recent card show were nine cards of Griffey,Jr.

Just the autograph or relic cards I have with a story, if I remember what happened. Some still need pictures.

Sometimes, when a player joins a new team, a card set will be released before a photo of the player in the new uniform can be obtained. Most of the time, preferably, there will be a note on the card, or just a second card in the Series 2 release when card companies actually cared. But sometimes...sometimes they would paint on a new jersey. And it's absolutely hideous. The entire 2000 Topps USA set for the men could be on this list, also.

This list includes baseball players who had at least two RC cards issued by Topps. Recommendations are welcome!

Different criteria are considered in determining whether or not a player is worthy including but not limited to: Pro Bowls with the Bengals, playing on playoff/Super Bowl teams, HOF, and playing the majority of a player's careerwith the Bengals. Not uncommon nowadays, since every "rookie" player seems to get at least a few hundred cards. I always get a chuckle when these cards don them as some type of great prospect.

My HOF cards of anyone who's been inducted into the hall who played within my life. Surprisingly, the list is pretty long considering I'm only 21 (I was born at the tail end of '92).

The NBA has been a guiding factor in my life since I was 12 years old, and most of the time since then, the NBA has played a role in every day since. It all started somewhere, though, and that date was February 14th, 1996. Valentine's Day. I had already been collecting cards for 8 years by that point, but none of my friends collected NASCAR or non-sport. Everyone collected the NBA. So Mom got me a pack of 1995-96 Fleer for Valentine's Day and changed my life forever. Later that night, I found the Knicks-Hornets game on MSG, and the rest, as they say, is history. At one point in time, Jose Canseco was probably one of the best baseball players in the world. However, as we now know, he was on steroids for a majority of his career. Nowadays, you probably know him for being arrested numerous times and for being a d-list celebrity

LaTroy Hawkins started 98 of his first 99 games in the Bigs before becoming exclusively a reliever. Over 21 seasons, Hawkins had a record of 75-94 with 4.31 ERA, 983 K's, and 127 Saves. Pitching for 11 franchises, Hawkins would reach the World Series with Colorado in 2007.

Bobby Bonilla is known mainly for once signing the richest contract in baseball and how the Mets are still paying him. Bonilla was a 6 time All Star and won a World Series with the Marlins in 1997. He batted .279 AVG, 2,010 Hits, and 287 HRs. After 16 seasons with 8 teams, Bonilla recieved 0.4% of the vote for the Hall of Fame.

Gary Sheffield was a 9 time All Star who won a World Series in 1997. Sheffield batted .292 AVG, 2,689 Hits, 509 HRs, and 253 Steals. Over 22 seasons, Sheffield played for 8 teams. Has reached 13.3% of the vote for the Hall of Fame.

Ruben Sierra had a very lengthy career and he was a decent enough player. However, after he left the A's, he became a journeyman.

David Wells was a 3 time All Star and twice won the World Series. He went 239-157 with a 4.13 ERA and 2,201 Strikeouts. Over 21 seasons, he played for 9 teams including multiple times with Toronto, New York, and San Diego. Famous for throwing a perfect game in 1998, yet received less than 1% vote for the Hall of Fame.

Roberto Hernandez was a 2 time All Star over his 17 years in the big leagues. With 10 franchises he went 67-71, with 3.45 ERA, 945 SO, and 326 Saves. 20 years ago today he was traded with Wilson Alvarez and Danny Darwin to San Francisco in a trade deadline blockbuster.
