I'm voting also for the 1990. those colors they decided on for the borders were gaudy. My favorite is the 1989 also because it was the year I started collecting (unfortunately). I believe the best pictures were taken in the 1991 40yr anniversary.

I thought 1990 was particularly bad because 1987 Fleer and 1989 Donruss both made very successful use of a color gradient in their design. Then Topps comes out with their absolutely horrible version that made it seem like they were stuck using design technology that was some 20 years older than everyone else, and revealing that they had virtually no talent for design. 1991 only reinforced that. I think in 1992, when they made the first step in their quality overhaul, they must have hired a new graphic designer.

i definitely think the 1990 set had some horrible borders and the photography was pretty bad as well, especially compared to the competition.. didn't care much for the 1986 set either.. and in more current sets, i'm so tired of all the variations and parallels, its becoming ridiculous to try and collect a set or even personal team/player favorites...

Feels like 1994 when people complained there were too many insert sets (or so I read in Beckett's). I much rather have Topps, Donruss, Fleer, Upper Deck, Score and all those base sets with a limited quantity of insert sets.
And, yes, the 1990 Topps is ugly. Almost as hideous as the 1990 Bowman with the small player names and unattractive backs.

1991 Topps gets my overall worst Topps year. To small, color variations, and all that. 1990 is a second close though.

My opinion has
changed about this
set and a few
others. Besides the
overproduction of
every set past
1985, what held
back most of these
designs was the
card stock. Look at
all of the Tiffany
sets...
especially '86-'90.
I think they're all
beautiful with '88-
'90 being the best.
I used to hate them
all... but am very
fond of '89 & '90
these days. The
same 1990 design
used in 2013
Archives is
gorgeous. Maybe
someday the '90 set
will be looked at
like the '75 set?
That's a lot of
words just to say I
actually find
the '90
aesthetically
pleasing. I find
every Topps design
after '90 until
about 2008
(except '95, '99, '0
1) horrid, barring
some of the DP subs.
-------------------------------
Oh, there's a clock
in my head and
despite what it
said, another one
on the wall. They
don't agree at
all...

I like this set .I know it's gaudy and kinda ugly but it's a sign of the times. To me it's better then all the white bordered look alike set to follow. As far as the old cardboard I missed it ever since they changed to the white, Upper Deck copy

Looking at my own rankings, I seem to have said 1996 & 1997. Because they were ugly. And didn't even have the player's position on the front. And only had 495 cards. Ugh. So many flaws.

Topps - 1990
Fleer - 1991
Donruss - 1990 (1989 close second, 1991 third)
Score - 1991
Upper Deck - 1992
All in the mass-produced era. Is it because there is so much of it that they become nauseating?
