Tim McCarver Forum

Tim McCarver passed away from heart failure in Memphis today. He was 81 years old. 

Ugh, that hits home as he's been part of my baseball world for decades now - first as a player then as an announcer.

I always appreciated his wealth of knowledge even if I didn't always like how he delivered.

RIP Tim.

An underrated catcher, he was Bob Gibson and then Steve Carlton's personal battery mate. He was fun to listen to call Mets games with Fran Healy and Ralph Kiner in the 80s before his national WS appearances. RIP to a lifelong baseball mind.

One of the players I PC mainly because I enjoyed the way he called games. RIP Mr. McCarver.

On a Philadelphia Phillies PRISM television broadcast (maybe not exact, but close):

Tim McCarver: Boy, Tommy [Lasorda] sure is pi$$ed at the ump.

Chris Wheeler: Glad we're on cable, Timmy.

TM: Sorry about that everyone.

IIRC, that was during his first or second year in the booth and was approximately 1982. Back then, home games were not on "free" broadcast TV, but were sometimes on subscription cable channels. PRISM was a Phila-based movie channel that also showed home Flyers, Sixers, and Phillies games (and the main reason we got cable when we did, mainly for the Flyers and Phillies games). That moment stayed with me as he moved on to bigger broadcasts. Always makes me grin when I think about it.

I, too, am glad you were on cable that night, Timmy. RIP.

RIP Tim McCarver.  He was a great announcer.   The only time I heard him call games was on national broadcasts.

I always enjoyed him on the network broadcasts and liked "The Tim McCarver Show" on Saturday afternoons. RIP.

One of my favorite players and definitely my older brother's favorite.  I met him at a Cardinals event a couple years ago and I told him he was my brother's favorite player.  He said, "Your brother must not be very smart."  I loved it.

I spent a good part of my childhood watching the Mets in mid/late 80's.... so much fun watching Gooden, Straw, Hernandez, Carter.....   McCarver was the voice of all that.
