I love my cards and have many custom art cards in my collection. I know the hobby is not a fan of custom art cards and I was talking with someone saying I buy them and some people pay $$$ for them but the hobby says they are worthless. The person told me well if you never sell a card they are all worthless no matter if they are custom or not.

So that go me thinking if you never sell or trade a card is the card worthless? This is a fun question with no right answer. Just thought i would see what others thought.

I would have to agree with the person i was talking with. If i never sell / trade them they are worthless until myself or someone else does

Worth doesn't have to be sold to be valued.

As is the case on TCDB; the value of a general card that has been sitting in your collection untouched or unwanted by anyone for 15yrs is then scrutinized and becomes valuable the second someone asks for it. 

If that's true about cards, then wouldn't it be true of everything? A car, house, iPhone, etc. only has value at a point of sale?

The age olld question: How long is a piece of string?? What I mean is its really subjective...I have a auto'd card that is prolly 30-40 according to the hobby, I have turned down a 400 offer as it was a gift from the 1947 Heisman trophy winner and included a pretty cool convo 1 on 1 with him. Although that car sits in a binder, the experience is valuable even if it never sees the light of day again.

I think it was Bob Barker who said that "Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder" , which was real easy for him. What may be worth something to one person, could be worthless to another. 

In general, these are printed pieces of cardboard that are really worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it at any given moment in time.  This includes you when you got it in the first place.  

The addition of sentimental or experience value is another matter.  That may make the cash price irrelevant - see above.

People dwell on the cash value too much.  A lot of those people aren't real collectors.  Enjoy the cards and the history, etc., not the cash profit.
