Congrats! I think at 1 time or another we've all been there. That hesitation, that slight dread of "Am I doing the right thing?"
I can say I have also spent more than I thought I would on some "white whales" but you only live once - and if you do it right, once is enough

Pesonally, as someone who works with homeless and addicted every day, I think your story was beautiful.

I know sometimes people sell their parents' collection, (which in many of these cases, the kid doesn't care about anyway,) just to have money, and then they spend it on stupid things. That bothers me. But in this case, you are letting go of his collection to help with YOUR collection, (of different things, but it's still a collection,) which I think is cool, because you love and care about it, and are not pawning it off just to have it gone. Congrats!

This is what I was thinking! I hope that, whenever I go, that whatever I have put together can be transferred to something my kid or kids will enjoy at length. Really nice story and I really liked the idea of adding a label to the card to keep the memory of this event fresh.

I did something similar with the last gift my dad gave me for Christmas before he passed. He always saved up money throughout the year and then gave us cash as part of our gift. I sat on this for while as I wanted to apply this to something that I wanted and as a gift from my dad. With only a few cards remaining on the 1955 Topps set I was trying to complete, and before prices ballooned, I purchased a 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente Rookie (SGC 2). I have no plans of upgrading this card for my set.
