You make a very strong point FOR the primary reason for feedback, and it's for the benefit of others. I like that the feedback is open-ended, but don't necessarily like the rating options. Revamping the system has been discussed and I don't recall the consensus.

Let me reiterate one point --- I do not think that negative feedback should be used for frivolous occurances (i.e.-took too long, card had a bad corner, substituted cards, etc.) but only in the instances where someone was legitimatly wronged in a transaction. It is a last resort and should be treated as such.
Sorry. My rant is over.

I have never traded or sold on this site but use Ebay quite often and am always worried about leaving negative feedback. So I do so on rare occasions. I recently felt I had to for the first time in probably a year, last week. I bought a minor league set and waited over a month and never received the item, a message or any clue as to if it was ever shipped. I messaged the seller three times with no reply so I finally went to the last course of action and requested Ebay to step in and they messaged the seller and still didn't receive a reply in the 7 days they gave the seller. After the 7 days Ebay gave me a refund but I felt that the seller definitely deserved a negative review for having no communication in almost 2 months from the purchase date.

I hear both sides of the issue and understand why some choose not to leave negative feedback. But if you stick to the facts of why the trade was a bad experience and keep the emotion out of what you write, those who read it will at least get a head's up on a potentially bad trade. Retaliatory feedback that has no facts to warrant it other than that you rated some negative is usually quite evident. When I have seen someone with a negative that is obviously retaliatory, I look at the other guy's feedback and can usually find out why it was left. I then know the good guy from the bad guy. Two of the members that commented here are good examples of good guys who got retaliatory feedback.
Remember also that in the way you write up a feedback is a mark on your own character, be it good or bad.

Some time ago I made a trade and a great trader never mailed his cards to me. After awhile I asked if he did get a chance to mail them and again I had to wait for an answer
I went as far as used snail mail to message him in case computer went down. Remember when these things could cost almost $1000?
I got a responce from his wife in a handwritten letter. Seems he fell at home and broke a arm and leg. Cards were on desk waiting to be mailed.
She mailed the cards and they came same day as he fell before mailing cards that day.
Ever since then I think about that or worse. when someone that is active like stops

Robert “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped and summer was gone.” ― A. Bartlett Giamatti robertkimble.us/tradingcards

I absolutely agree that it should be a last resort to leave negative feedback. Typically, I'm taking for low value commons. If they are less than spectacular, or one of 100 is missed, I've added it back to my wantlist. Many times when chasing recent insert sets, I'd get the wrong card (blue, or black parallel version or other mistake). I have left negative feedback just a few times (3, maybe 4 of nearly 600 trades) when, after numerous messages and many, many months, I gave up on the transaction because it was never sent from their end, but they got my cards.

I have never left negetive feedback. I came real close one time. In that case the person wasn't responding to my messages asking about the cards, it had been a month. The person had been on the database almost everyday. I did finally get cards, not all the ones we had traded for. I opted not to leave any feedback, since I did get something. If nothing ever came and more important if that person never responded I would have. Communication is key with me. That being said I would expect a retalitory response on there end on my feedback. I do look at other peoples feedback when I haven't done a trade with them before, but once I have done a trade with them and it went great I don't look. Not all that long ago I saw someone post on the forum something negetive about someone I regularly trade with. That stinks for them, but I still trade with that person with no issues. I would hope people would look at the other persons feedback and give them the benefit of the doubt. I think(hope) once you establish a relationship with people that you trade with that they would understand if something went south, like the card(s) don't show up. Again stress communication. Overall my experience has been phenominal. I absolutely enjoy trading.
Trade On!!!
