44 - Rick Monday - Chicago Cubs |

45 - Ellie Rodriguez UER - Milwaukee BrewersUER: Photo either Paul Ratliff or John Felske |
||
Despite the popular rumor to the contrary, this is Ellie Rodriguez in the photo. It is from the third inning of a loss to the Royals 6-3 on June 17, 1972. Rodriguez is fielding a bunt, with Bill Parsons and George Scott also converging on the ball. Six cards from the 1972 Topps set were taken in this game: Rodriguez, Bill Parsons, Ray Newman, Amos Otis, Ed Kirkpatrick and Paul Splittorff. Paul Ratliff only appeared in 11 home games with the Brewers in 1972 and only three with a possible pitcher with digit 2 on uniform (42 Skip Lockwood or 52 Bill Parsons). Those were June 3 (George Scott played 3B that game), June 4 (Skip Lockwood knocked out in first inning), July 6 (second half of double header heading into night). It is definitely not Paul Ratliff.

48 - Paul Splittorff - Kansas City Royals |
||
This photo was taken at County Stadium in a Royals 6-3 win over the Brewers on June 17, 1972. Splittorff pitched a complete game that day. While Splittorff appeared in two games at County Stadium in 1972, the large fan wearing all black in the upper left corner can also be seen in the same location on the Ray Newman card. Ray Newman pitched the ninth inning in relief for the Brewers in this game in one of his only three appearances in Milwaukee in 1972. Six cards total were taken from this game: Splittorff, Newman, Ed Kirkpatrick, Amos Otis, Ellie Rodriguez and Bill Parsons. |
