Signs of the 80s: Leading Scorers

by bevans - 90 cards (Last updated on Apr 24, 2020)

61. 2004-05 In The Game Franchises Canadian - Autographs #A-TG Thomas Gradin

#64 - 542 Points in 601 Games

Drafted by Chicago but traded straight up for Steve Ludzik (139 career points) without ever playing a game for them. Gradin spent the first 8 of his 9 NHL seasons with Vancouver and was close to a point-per-game player. Hit career highs of 37 goals and 86 points in 1981-82, and then led the team with 19 more playoff points as the Canucks advanced to their first Stanley Cup Final.

62. 2004-05 In The Game Franchises Canadian - Autographs #A-RC2 Randy Carlyle

#65 - 542 Points in 751 Games

Carlyle won the Norris Trophy with a career-high 83 points with Pittsburgh in 1980-81. This came three years after the Ballard-era Leafs had traded him for Dave Burrows, who scored 2 points in that same 1980-81 season and retired immediately afterwards.

Carlyle went on to play 12 more seasons with Pittsburgh and Winnipeg, scoring 40+ points seven times and retiring with 647 career points. He went on to become a successful coach in retirement, winning a Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007.

63. 2000-01 Be a Player Signature Series - Autographs #12 Doug Gilmour

#68 - 530 Points in 534 Games

Gilmour was the NHL's playoff scoring leader with St. Louis in 1986 (despite not reaching the Final) and won a Stanley Cup with Calgary in 1989, but had his best seasons with the Leafs in the early 1990s. He topped 100 points three times, 80 points nine times, and retired with over 1400 points in 20 seasons.

This isn't a great choice for a signed Gilmour card as he only spent parts of two seasons with Buffalo very late in his career. But hey, it was only three bucks!

64. 1998-99 Be a Player - Autographs #228 Bob Carpenter

#69 - 530 Points 668 Games

Carpenter finished with 67, 69, 68, and 95 points in his first four seasons (81-82 through 84-85), becoming the first US-born player to record a 50-goal season in his fourth year. He played another 14 years in the NHL before finally retiring in 1999, but never reached 60 points in a season again.

65. 2010-11 In The Game Decades 1980s #A-BA Brent Ashton

#70 - 530 Points in 811 Games

Ashton played for 8 different NHL teams in his career (or 9 if you count the Colorado Rockies and New Jersey Devils as different teams). I believe that was the record when he retired but has been surpassed many times since then. (Mike Sillinger is the current record-holder with 12 teams.) Ashton topped 50 points seven times including a career-high 75 in 1986-87.

66. 2004-05 UD Legendary Signatures - Autographs #BR Brian Sutter

#71 - 520 Points in 589 Games

The second-highest scoring Sutter brother, Brian spent his entire 12-year career with the Blues, scoring 70+ points on five occasions. He went on to a lengthy coaching career, with stints in St. Louis, Boston, Calgary, and Chicago.

67. 2017 Upper Deck Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial - Maple Leaf Marks #MLM-TF Tom Fergus

#72 - 520 Points in 621 Games

Fergus scored 50+ points six times in a career split fairly evenly between Boston and Toronto. He hit his career-best 73 points in back-to-back seasons before and after a 1985 trade for Bill Derlago.

68. 2010-11 In The Game Decades 1980s #A-MRO Mike Rogers

#73 - 519 Points in 484 Games

Rogers joined the NHL after the WHA merger in 1979 and topped 100 points in each of his first three NHL seasons. Like many players of the era his career fizzled out at quite a young age, and he retired at 31 after the 1985-86 season.

69. 2004-05 UD Legendary Signatures - Autographs #DU Ron Duguay

#74 - 517 Points in 714 Games

Duguay is probably better remembered for his hair and for dating "supermodel" Carol Alt than he is for his hockey prowess, but he did top 50 points six times including back-to-back 80 point seasons following a 1983 trade to Detroit

70. 2012-13 In The Game Forever Rivals - Autographs #A-LB Laurie Boschman

#75 - 513 Points in 786 Games

Laurie was arguably better known for fighting than for scoring. (He probably had to defend himself a lot growing up with a girl's name!) He scored 50+ points only three times (nearly 70+ with 74, 76, and 69 points in three consecutive seasons with Winnipeg), but had 150+ penalty minutes for nine consecutive seasons. In his final NHL season in 1992-93 he was the captain of the expansion Ottawa Senators.

I suspect many of them have never had pack-issued autograph cards. The only ones that I know for sure exist are Ramage and Bridgman.
