Signs of the 80s: Leading Scorers

by bevans - 90 cards (Last updated on Apr 24, 2020)

31. 2014-15 Upper Deck The Cup - Enshrinements #E-SL Steve Larmer

#32 - 678 Points in 647 Games

Famously not pictured on his own rookie card (O-Pee-Chee mixed up Larmer and Steve Ludzik), Larmer scored 70+ points in all 11 of his seasons with Chicago. Perhaps more significantly he never missed a game in those 11 seasons with Chicago, carrying an 884 consecutive games played streak into the 1993-94 season.

Needing one more healthy season to set a new league ironman record, Larmer instead sat out the first month of the season in a contract dispute and was eventually traded to the New York Rangers. So no record, but he did end up winning his only Stanley Cup that season so I don't imagine he's too upset about it.

32. 2012-13 In The Game Motown Madness - Autographs #A-MF Mike Foligno

#33 - 662 Points in 819 Games

The father of Nick and Marcus started out with Detroit (and scored 71 points in his rookie season) but spent most of his career with Buffalo, where he recorded six 50-point seasons.

33. 2004-05 In The Game Franchises US West - Autographs #A-NB Neal Broten

#34 - 660 Points in 639 Games

A Minnesota native, Broten spent his first 12 seasons with the North Stars and scored 50+ points nine times, including a career-best 105 points in 1985-86. He moved with the franchise to Dallas in 1993 and won his only Stanley Cup after a 1995 trade to New Jersey.

34. 2012-13 Panini Classics Signatures - Autographs #44 Paul MacLean

#35 - 656 Points in 682 Games

Hockey's second most famous moustache (after Lanny of course), MacLean spent most of his career in Winnipeg where he scored 70+ points five times, including a career-high 101-point season in 84-85.

35. 2004-05 UD Legendary Signatures - Autographs #DV Dave Christian

#36 - 655 Points in 784 Games

Chirstian joined NHL Winnipeg late in the 1979-80 season, after winning a gold medal with Team USA at the 1980 Olymics in Lake Placid. He scored 50+ point 8 times in 9 seasons with the Jets and Caps (twice topping 80 points) and finished out his career with brief stops in Boston, St. Louis, and Chicago.

36. 2010-11 In The Game Decades 1980s #A-MBU Mike Bullard

#37 - 646 Points in 662 Games

Bullard was Pittsburgh's leading scorer pre-Mario, with a career-high 51 goals in 1983-84. He topped 40 goals again in 1985-86 and was then traded to Calgary for Dan Quinn (#84 on this list).

He reached 48 goals and 103 points with the Flames in 1987-88 but was then moved again, in a multi-player trade with Doug Gilmour (#52) the principal return in the opposite direction.

37. 2011-12 Parkhurst Champions - Autographs #81 Mark Howe

#38 - 643 Points in 746 Games

Mark scored 500+ career points as a high-scoring forward in the WHA and 700+ career points as a high-scoring defenseman in the NHL. He won two Avco Cups with WHA Houston and lost in two Stanley Cup Finals with Philadelphia.

Hartford traded Howe early in his NHL career for Ken Linseman, which might not have been so bad if they hadn't immediately turned around and flipped Linseman for Risto Siltanen. Howe spent 10 years with the Flyers and was a 3-time First Team All-Star. Siltanen played parts of four seasons with the Whalers and once finished as high as 27th in All-Star voting.

38. 2017-18 SP Authentic - Sign of the Times #SOTT-SI Charlie Simmer

#39 - 638 Points in 591 Games

The third member of LA's Triple Crown Line, Simmer had a hard time staying healthy for most of his career but put up some big numbers when he was able to play (e.g. 101 points in only 64 games in 80-81, and 105 points in only 65 games in 81-82). He only managed to play 70+ games three times in 14 seasons, but still retired with 711 career points in 712 games.

39. 2010-11 In The Game Decades 1980s #A-AST Anton Stastny

#40 - 636 Points in 650 Games

Peter's younger brother scored 70+ points six times with the Nordiques. He left the NHL at 29 but played four more years in Europe.

40. 2004-05 In The Game Franchises Canadian - Autographs #A-DHU2 Dale Hunter

#41 - 636 Points in 762 Games

Known primarily as a tough guy or "shift disturber" Hunter could also score, topping 70 points six times and retiring with over 1000 career points in 19 seasons. After seven years in Quebec he was traded to Washington for the first round draft pick which became Joe Sakic.
