BASEBALL'S BIG GUYSby jdogg1228 - 241 cards (Last updated on Apr 22, 2024) |
Accepting suggestions 240+ lbs. I will also accept your suggestion if they look more than that but aren't. Will also accept 236-239 lbs. (but that's not very common due to it being oddly specific.)
NEW FEATURE: I will now accept funny pictures you have for any of these big players! For example: https://www.bostonherald.com/wp-content/uploads/migration/2016/02/21/022116soxms10.jpg?w=535

2. 2013 Choice Binghamton Mets #27 Glenn Abbott
225 lbs? In his playing days, maybe.
|
9. 2019 Topps Total #741 Matt Albers
Only 225! Nonsense! That scale must have been broken- but I'm not rude enough to say it was because he stepped on it.

If anyone has suggestions, let me know.
https://www.tcdb.com/Person.cfm/pid/2722/Frank-Howard His '71 OPC card says 250 and his '71 Dell stamp says 285 ... that was probably before and after breakfast.
Thanks, theFalcon! Cards were added. :)
Cant forget this fella: https://www.tcdb.com/Person.cfm/pid/28558/Jumbo-Diaz usually listed 270s+, frequently 300+
Oh, and got a reminder from John Kruk on this one:
| ||
Thank you DarkSide830!
| ||
Thanks to ComposerMike!
You have one Orioles DH/1B, but could add another - Sam Horn. Here is listed at 250 - https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/200/cid/93215/1992-Score-290-Sam-Horn
| ||
Thanks, Tscastle! | ||
Almost any David Wells between, say 1997 and 1999. Cards list him at 225 but I feel like he was more than that, especially when he was battling gout. I feel like Billy "country breakfast" Butler was a pretty big guy, too. Maybe around 250 if I'm not mistaken
| ||
1990's Rick Reuschel might qualify for the list.
thanks doogie_13 and grim25. doogie_13, I was able to find cards of David Wells in his later years, (2007-2008) in which he was listed at 250 lbs. Billy Butler has been added as well. grim25, Rick Reuschel does qualify; he has been added.
Hey, how about Joba Chamberlain? I seem to remember him being a pretty big dude
Ah yes, now that I think about it I remember him being a big guy as well. Thanks for the reminder!
See, Nelson Cruz says he's 230. But, I find it hard to believe you don't put on any weight from 2015 to 2021. https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/187868/cid/11877218/2018-Topps-Update---Gold-US182-Nelson-Cruz
He DOES NOT look 250 but the card says so. https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/130658/cid/8690392/2016-Stadium-Club---Black-252-Phil-Hughes
Thanks for the suggestions, TwinKiller. I had no idea Phil Huges even weighed that much! You make a good point with Nelson Cruz too. (Both cards have been added now.)
No one said Miguel Sano yet? It says 260. Just for reference, this photo just compares how much bigger Sano is to Cruz, via pant size. https://www.google.com/search?q=nelson+cruz+in+miguel+sano+pants&oq=nelson+cruz+in+mig&aqs=chrome.0.0i512j69i57j0i22i30.5874j0j7&client=tablet-android-verizon&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#imgrc=wXKYv_KZEFG6BM
| ||
How could I forget Sano! Funny picture!
Bobby Jenks @ 275 lbs. | ||
He is no way 240. https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/146271/cid/11241548/2017-Topps---Rediscover-Topps-Stamped-Buybacks-Bronze-492-Bob-Wi And most Ryan Howard cards say 260.
Fun to add to this great list. Carlos Zambrano says 255.
Thanks for the suggestions both of you guys! TwinKiller, I was actually thinking of adding Howard today, so funny you said that. Thanks again.
Also, just wanted to thank everyone who is contributing to this list. You have to admit, it's a lot of fun watching this list come together, with more additions each day.
| ||
He played in the majors for a lot of this year. Has no major league image though. But he is 6'10" 260. https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/209347/cid/13358409/2019-Grandstand-Fort-Myers-Miracle-NNO-Bailey-Ober
2 more. Matt Capps and even though they don't put weight on his cards The Babe must apply. Imagine the amount of cards on this list if it applied to football. The weight limit you would have to make would be 300 pounds!
Jim Thome - 250 Tommy Hunter - 250 Sidney Ponson - 255 Jumbo Brown - 295 !!! https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/9090/cid/218043/1992-Conlon-Collection-TSN-454-Jumbo-Brown
| ||
Thanks for the suggestions, TwinKiller and CollectingAfterDeath. TwinKiller, that's why football is a tough sport. Next thing you know, there's a 350 pound man ready to tackle you!
wow, Kenley's that heavy? never would have guessed.
Surprised when I saw it too.
Anthony Rizzo - 240 https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/225914/cid/15187517/2020-Bowman-Chrome-92-Anthony-Rizzo Joey Gallo - 250 https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/243937/cid/16374850/2021-Bowman-32-Joey-Gallo Adam Dunn - 285 !!! https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/113694/cid/7811984/2015-Stadium-Club---Gold-Foil-246-Adam-Dunn
Honorable mention: Mike Trout - 235 https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/218129/cid/14603170/2020-Bowman-1-Mike-Trout Another mention: Roger Clemens - 235 https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/256378/cid/16163234/2021-Donruss-236a-Roger-Clemens
| ||
I actually added Rizzo before I looked at your comment, so if it is alright with you, it won't say "Submitted by: CollectingAfterDeath." Great suggestions, I totally forgot about Gallo and Dunn. I won't do your honorable mentions because I've lost track of the times I've looked on the back of a baseball cards and it said "235 lbs." As much as I'd like to add Trout, I don't really want to go back and find all the 235 people.
Understandable to have a cut-off. Wasn't sure at the time that it was 240. Thank you for letting me participate. Got another one for your list: Mitch Moreland - 245 https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/239033/cid/16233689/2021-Topps-Heritage-58-Mitch-Moreland This list gives me more of an appreciation for how powerful, pound for pound, Hank Aaron at just 180 lbs was, with those 755 dingers.
| ||
Of course, the more contributers, the better!
Cool, forgot about Mitch Moreland. Nice card too.
Yeah I'm hoping everyone agrees that Hammerin' Hank is the real home run king. He is a perfect example. He may be a skinny boy, but what you learn from that is you don't need steroids to be one of the greatest to ever play the game.
Steve balboni...
| ||
Hey, parsley24 I did not add him because he only weighs 225.
Matt Albers is "only" 225, but looks heavier. Plus, he goes from 195 to 225 through his career.
Thanks for bringing that back up. I was looking through my 2019 Topps Update set and saw him there. He looked pretty big, but I didn't add him right away. Thatnks again.
Butch Huskey circa 2000 Topps.
And also BR says that Ruth weighed 215 but that was in his PRIME. He probably was 230 - 240 in his final year with the braves or a coach for the Dodgers. You should add one of those cards instead.
Dick "The Monster" Radatz was up to 265 at the end of his career - https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/69/cid/30895/1969-Topps-663-Dick-Radatz
Thanks, theFalcon. TwinKiller, I added the Bambino on the Braves. :)
TwinKiller, just noticed Butch Huskey suggestion above. He was just added.
| ||
jmnovff, big Frank is already added. Thank you for your want to contribute though.
| ||
Boog Powell was a big guy!
Indeed he was! He is added.
Maybe Jason Giambi? I think he was up to 240 later on. Check maybe a Colorado Rockies card. Sorry if he's already here, didn't see him first time through.
Thanks, found a 2015 card on the Indians so that will be added.
Frankie Montas. 255lbs 2021 Heritage. Madison Bumgarner. 250lbs 2019 Donruss
| ||
Thanks again, those will be added too
Definitely at the end of his career did Kirby get there. No exact weight but we can all make assumptions right?
Great suggestion! One problem... Having trouble choosing one of these two cards: The one you suggested is cool, as the "Big Show" would be a fitting show to be on if you make my list And then there's THIS CARD where he looks huge. Which one is best?
| ||
The big show card because there is no weight shown unlike yours where it says 215. He was definitely bigger after retirement and your card is him as a player. Just my reasoning.
Ok thanks. Will add it soon.
-
| ||
Bobby Bonilla 240lbs Check out his 01 Topps card with Cardinals.
thanks to you. | ||
Jim Bibby was listed at 250 late in his career .... I remember how the sweat came off the bill of his cap like a drip coffeemaker. https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/87/cid/38073/1982-Donruss-171-Jim-Bibby
| ||
Chris Carter got up to 250. Check out 15 Heritage #485 with Astros.
Thanks a lot, theFalcon and chvlDm.
Good list. Really, I don't look at the weights of players, so some of these are surprises to me.
| ||
He's actually the second guy on here. He didn't really have a peak, his rookie year was '06 and then no more cards were made.
| ||
I didnt see Bob Hamelin. BB REFERENCE lists him at 240. ROLEN AND RUTH are listed twice btw...maybe others but i noticed them
Thanks, good catch. Noticed some others were added twice and removed those. I will add Bob Hamelin.
1986 Calbee #33 Nobuyuki Kagawa | Trading Card Database (tcdb.com) Here's a Japanese player. He weighed 216 pounds during his rookie year and it grew over the years.
| ||
Bob Hamelin has been added. Nobuyuki Kagawa's only card back is in like japanese or something, but since he's HUGE, I'll go ahead and add him. Thanks a lot!
Joey Meyer is listed at 265 on a late 80s card I was looking at lately...
Thanks! | ||
A couple names that jumped to my mind, that i don't think you have, were Charlie Kerfeld (scroll down his gallery to see his journey from 230 to 295) and Hector Villanueva (see his Chinese league cards at the end of his gallery and do the kg to lbs conversion).
| ||
Thanks to both of you | ||
Great list. I had three possibilities in mind the whole time--and Rick Reuschel and Tony Gwynn finally appeared. Paul Reuschel didn't make the cut. Then I was up way too late checking out candidates that all turned out to be in the 225 range.... v3
Dwight Gooden. This card makes him look like he makes the list. Its even got the big baby in the back!
Thanks, that Dwight Gooden one was funny. I'll add Paul Reuschel and the Gooden card in the next update. v3, thanks a bunch for the suggestion. Forgot there was another Reuschel.
| ||
It would be easier to find if you have someone listed if they were in alphabetical order by last name.
Thanks, that suggestion will be taken into consideration and will probably be caried out.
It says 220 but we all know that that is probably his playing days weight. Manager pounds is what I call 'em.
That will be added, thanks!
Thank you all for your patience while this LONG update was in progress. Enjoy this BIG list! See what I did there? ;)
I will be continuing to accept the seemingly never-ending canidates for this list, thank you.
Good to see the list alphabetized.. Could you list the top 10 by weight in the header section.
Sure, no problem. Like the suggestion.
Honorable mention for Willians Astudillo who is only 225 but is also only 5'9"?
And also the fact that his nickname is La Tortuga. Choose his 2021 GQ card as the card. Shows it the best IMO.
Ok, I'll check it out. Can you provide a link please? I'm not seeing Astudillo in 21 GQ, thanks.
| ||
Probably 2020 he meant...
Ha! I will certainly be adding that!
He might not be at the right weight, (at least I think so, but this card kinda looks otherwise,) but Don ZImmer deserves honorable mention for being known as a melting walrus. EDIT: Looked it up and thats no such thing. Thats just what I've called him :\
| ||
I think I'll pass on that one, only because his face only looks so big because of all that tobacco in his mouth. Funny nickname though!
I just saw an article that John Kruk was pretty big at the end of his career and as the coach of the Phillies MiLB teams.. This card kinda shows it, but I dont know an exact manager weight, but the card says 175. (That was his weight when he was with the Padres, I think.)
Unless you can find a card of Kruk as a coach of the minor leagues, I think I'll pass on that one too. Thanks a lot for looking into it though.
Josh Naylor is 250 according to Fangraphs
Thank you, I will add that.
Not sure if he's on the list yet, but he should be. Big Beer drinking and ironically former Brewer, Dan Vogelbach.
Yeah, I got Vogelbach! He is one big boy...
Happy Holidays everyone! Can't even believe this list is still being updated.
One of my favorite lists to look through still. I'm sure they will keep on coming...
You may or may not have seen these in the actual list, but here are some funny pictures (or in some cases maybe even videos) of the big guys featured in the list. I call it: The Big Guy Gallery. It will stay in the comments for reference, easy access, and of course, if you need a good laugh. Some photos/videos listed here aren't in the actual list, so be sure to check this out. Billy "country breakfast" Butler Terry "Fat tub of goo" Forster- Late Night Show with David Letterman Miguel Sano (Courtesy of TwinKiller) Nelson Cruz wearing Sano's pants. ENJOY :)
| ||
| ||
Thanks, will be sure to add him.
| ||
Love getting suggestions again, will add him, thanks.
Not sure if he was listed or not, but Im pretty sure Kirby Puckett was a big boy :)
Indeed he was, but he's already added. Thanks though.
Seems like Cecil Fielder would be in the Top 10 heaviest list at the top of this page. Maybe Prince Fielder too?
Cecil was 250 and Prince was 275. Close, but not quite enough to crack the top 10
Oh if only we all had baseball card backs and media guides to generously underestimate our true size. Closest I've got is my driver's license. The guys on this list range from "tall guys with weights proportional to their height", to "regular height guys with just a bit more bulk", to "if you saw him walking down the street you would not believe he was a professional athlete". Good stuff. A suggestion for your set: Adalberto Meija. The card I have (https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/155909/cid/11364591/2018-Topps-494-Adalberto-Mejia) lists him as 195lb, but he clearly must've put on a few pounds by the end of his career because Baseball Reference lists him as 265lb (https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mejiaad01.shtml). I did some sleuthing and his 2019 Topps card (https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/182808/cid/13160971/2019-Topps-383-Adalberto-Mejia) still lists him as 195lb, so Baseball Reference must know something that I don't. I don't know your stance on non-baseball card sources for weights, but it's Baseball Reference so they must have some legitimate source for that number.
Wow, you did your research! I'll be sure to add him and include a link to his BB reference page. Thanks
Not sure if he's been added or not yet, but Greg "Toe" Nash was pretty big. Last I heard he was either in prison or out but on probation. https://www.tcdb.com/Person.cfm/pid/29682/Greg-Nash
| ||
Looks like he doesn’t quite make the cut (220) but thanks for the suggestion. I do know he didn’t even learn to read until he started playing baseball. |
