Who made TCDb better for you? A giveaway in honor of switzr1, PapaG321, and other members we've lostby FreehanSolo (Last updated on Jan 22, 2023) |
The TCDb boasts a community of fantastic people that make the site so much more than just a database of checklists, images, and collections. So many members have put their time, effort, and more into building this place into what it is. Some of them are no longer with us, like switzr1 and PapaG321, who recently passed away, and I think it's important to remember all of them for what they've done here, before or after they've gone. I've also been wanting to put my money where my mouth is in support of Admin's amazing site. So I've decided to run the following giveaway.
What it's about:
We've all been positively affected by other members here, past and present. There's the person you made your first trade with, or someone that told you about a cool feature that improved how you use the site, or a generous soul that blew you away with a PIF.
So to enter this contest, simply pick someone that made the TCDb a better place for you and say how exactly they did that. It doesn't need to be an essay, just something like
"randylaw was one of the first members I traded with and we've gone on to make several more deals. That really got me acclimated to trading here and addicted to the fun of making trades on the site"
or "I have trouble finding my cards in the database but tcdbkrn is always quick with a reply in the forums when I ask about them. I love how the community includes members that want to help others catalog their collections!"
You're welcome to write about more than one member, but each entrant gets only one entry in the giveaway. Winners will be randomly chosen so there's no need to bribe anyone by praising them.
The prizes:
Like I said, I'm putting my money where my mouth is in supporting the site with this giveaway. There will be three winners randomly chosen, and each winner will receive their choice of one item from the TCDb store. That includes:
- T-shirts (several options)
- Hoodies
- Baseball caps
- Coffee mugs
- Face masks
If you're randomly chosen, you get your choice of any ONE of those items, limited only by the options in the store (e.g. shirts have multiple color and size options).
The rules:
- Only one entry per member
- The names of all entrants who followed all rules will be entered into Wheel of Names and three winners will be chosen
- Members can only be chosen once, and winners can select only one prize
- I will allow members from any country to which the store ships to to participate. If you want to verify that your country is included, add something from the store to your cart, go to check out, and select your country. As long as you don't see "We're not currently shipping to this country" you qualify
- The contest will run from when it gets posted (the evening of Tuesday, January 17) until Sunday, January 22 at 8pm EDT. The winners will then be randomly selected
- I'll directly message the winners and give them up to a week to respond, at which point I'll remove their name(s) from consideration and re-randomize one or more new winners
Not too difficult, right? So come share some memories of your favorite members and maybe win a prize for your effort!

I will say 2 people. First up is vrooomed, who when I first joined looking for the 1992 Fleer variants, he helped me with a lot of the technical side of things, and explained nearly everything to me. One of the first interactions I had here. Next is CollectorKing23 who made my first trade, and a big one for that matter. We've made a couple deals since. Without them my TCDb journey may be much different.
I’m sad for all the TCDB members who were close to anyone we lost last year. I had not interacted with either but they sounded like great community members, friends, and family. I think I would say 2 members have helped - vroomed because he often responds to my questions with helpful info (card ID questions, site questions, and Secret Santa questions). Second, Rossi413 was one of the first members I interacted with here and we have had a few other transactions since then. He showed me how kind and helpful people on TCDB can be, when I was fairly new to the site. Early experiences on new sites can often make or break it, and Mr. Rossi really helped me buy in to the site because of how friendly he was.
I have to call out NYMHall and DukeyDevil, my two most frequent trading partners, for all of their assistance over the past few years. And most of those deals have involved lots of cards, too! Both excellent people and I've enjoyed all our interactions.
I am going to say jrad1973 whom which I did my first trade with and helped me how to figure out trading on this site!
I have many members who I need to thank. I would like to start with the members who I bugged frequently about IR's when I first joined. Regardless of how many questions I asked and IR's I submitted, the members didn't seem to mind. In fact, they seemed to enjoy my questions, and it have me so much knowledge. As someone who works in IR's sometimes now and can make adjustments (like team/PID corrections, linking problems, missing cards, and incorrect checklists) that I formerly submitted tons of IR's for, their knowledge has laid a basis for my contributions back to the site today. The particular members that come to mind who have been of assistance to me are Admin, vrooomed, Billy Kingsley, FreehanSolo, rmpaq5, Corky, and stump417. As I later started documenting my Yu-Gi-Oh! cards in the gaming category, I had limited knowledge about what sets they came from and many sets weren't listed here yet. I received a lot of assistance from FiresNBeers, who made the process much easier and more understanding for me. From a trading perspective, I want to thank many members who have informed me of ways to improve my shipping procedures. These members include spazmatastic, captkirk42, DukeyDevil, DyeHardFan, and several others who have given great suggestion to make shipping more protected while still being cost-efficient. There was also a thread post here from someone who explained about how many stamps it took on PWE envelopes based on the amount of cards which was helpful, but can't recall who at the moment (apologies). I want to thank Griffey423, who was the very first completed trade and feedback I received here. There have been many completed trades since as I recently hit 100 completed trades. I have the most completed transactions with svenny (7) so would like to thank him for the continued trust in me. I also want to thank Roper for a pleasant experience with my first member-to-member meetup for a trade. These member's helpfulness and availability for assistance and information has helped me become more knowledgeable about the site and I enjoy sharing my acquired knowledge with others who are just beginning their journeys here. There are likely many others I need to thank that have had an impact on my TCDB journey and apologize to anyone I left out. I am looking forward to what the future may hold in terms of making more deals with members. Thank you to everyone who have had conversations with me, trades with me, or provided assistance with IR's and other issues I have had over the years. Thank you to anyone who has read this far. I will conclude with a special thank you to FreehanSolo for creating this giveaway in memory of the highly generous members to come before me and made such an impact on the TCDB community (like Switzr1's and PapaG321's long-lasting legacies).
Thanks for doing this, a very kind gesture!
Not entering, but this is a very kind gesture to the TCDB users!
Too many to thank for their examples of knowledge, generosity, and friendship. Grateful to add my bits of knowledge from the corners of my collection to this community. And continue the legacy of generosity of those that we've lost. PIF PIF Hooray!
I'm new to trading and would like to thank ALL my trading partners for their patience and help, among them Fritz63, glennbiss, Randy G and Chemo. Also the Secret Santa idea that helped me realize this is a community with a common interest, not just a website!
There are so many great collectors and hobbyists on this site. The moments which have stood out for me are: FiresNBeers (who sent me a random welcome email when I joined), C2Cigars (who is a valuable asset with questions regarding user lists and posting videos), and vrooomed (for his assistance in editing the site and settling me from doing too much at once).
Vroomed and C2Cigars. Dan as I have sent numerous emails to about - more than anything, questions about the site. He has helped me tremendously. I have not interacted with C2Cigars however, I read each and every one of his posts which has helped me a lot. There are numerous other members on this site which, like C2Cigars I read everything they post. It's been a great help and is much appreciated.
One of the first members I interacted with online here was NJDevils, and then, not long after that, he was also the first member I met in person. Joe also met my son and started sending him PWEs with a couple odd cards here and there. Reminded me a lot of my interactions with Bob Bartosz, the owner of the card shop I worked for as a kid (he also was a photographer for Fleer in the 80s). The generosity bestowed upon my son by Joe (much like Bob's with me) is heartwarming. The amount of members I've dealt with on here is immense. I couldn't begin to list all the others. I always say that the hobby attracts (mostly) the best people on the planet. This site seems to atttract the best of those. So TCDB is truly the best of the best.
DukeyDevil has been super helpful with trading with me and has such a large want list and large number of availables that makes it fun to trade with. Vrooomed has been helpful in answering questions along the way to get comfortable creating/uploading checklists thanks to all for what you do for our site and community mark

As has been pointed out many times before, the TCDb community has so many friendly, generous and inspirational members. There are so many instances of members helping other members and members using their time and skills to go under the hood of TCDb, so to speak, and update/edit the database. Of course just about everyone here loves the database features and the trade manager too. But I also love the TCDb forum too. That's where many of us members go to socialize with other members and enhance our hobby activities. vrooomed (Dan) has been a big inspiration to me on the forums. When I joined TCDb almost five years ago, Dan had a fantasy baseball sign-up thread and his thread was the first one I ever posted a response to. And when I created my first TCDb forum thread, Dan was the first to reply. Dan's generosity is an inspiration, whether it's running multiple fantasy baseball leagues, running contests/giveaways, assisting other members with their questions or volunteering his time to assist in expanding/updating the database. And all of the interactions I've had with him have been totally nice and professional. I also gotta give props to other great generous and helpful members like BigEd76, C2Cigars, Billy Kingsley jasongerman, jimetal FiresnBeers, FreehanSolo (Dennis!) and so many others. Shoutouts also go to members who suggest new TCDb features and to Admin for the creation and evolution of TCDb. Thanks to all of you!
I will also acknowledge "Vroomed" who my always patient tutor while I got the feel of navigating this site. I have a feeling he helped many new members along the way. Members like him deserve praise and recognition ....
One of my first trades was with FAMDaddy. He was great to trade with and offered words of encouragement on how great TCDb was for him. I have made a few trades since then and more recently. I am finding that the best way to finish my 2019 Topps Heritage Baseball set is to trade. I'm building that set because the first cards I ever bought were 1970 Topps at the local 5 & 10 cent store. I recently turned 60 and am enjoying my time spent on the hobby and on TCDb. Thanks for doing this giveaway in honor of those who passed on recently.
For me it's 3 people. I seem to think Dan "vroomed" is my personal TCDB trainer but I guess I share him with everyone. He's always answering my questions and helping me as I try to add and fix things. The other 2 are Chuck aka "C2Cigars" and Mark "avesbruins65" Both of these men are amazing resources on the forums but that pales in comparison to their generousness and willingness to PIF the entire free world. This site is in good hands with these gents as well as many others who love the hobby and this database.
First of all, thank you for remembering those who helped pave the way. Also, thank you for your generosity. I have had the privilege to run across many different great members on this site. I would like to thank Vrooomed for helping me and lots of others on nagivating the site. I would also like to acknowledge DukeyDevil for showing me how to trade and how to do it the right way. There are many many others that are just as awesome on here! Thank you again!
So I dont personally have any stories as I admit I have mostly been lurking in the forums for the last 8 years so feel free to omit me from the giveaway. However, I would like to say I have been a member since 2015 and I use this site religiously to catalog my collection. The names mentioned here are all names I recognize from being active on the site and I just want to extend my condolences to anyone who was close with these members who passed away. I know they were great contributors to the site and I appreciate everything all of the members do to contribute to making this site a wonderful place to use.
Great idea, thanks for doing this. It seems like whenever I have a question, the two members that are always there with a helpful answer are vrooomed and BillyKingsley.
FreehanSolo, Thank you for creating this! Here's my list in no specific order:
Thank you! | |
Earlier this week I celebrated my 11 year anniversary on TCDb. Over that time I have been struck by how generous many members here are with their time, support and their collections. This truly is a wonderful site with many wonderful people. bobberkill, who I’ve been blessed to meet and interact with on many occasions. Sportzcommish, who I’ve been blessed to communicate with and will hopefully meet in person someday. Thanks to both these men for their support and friendship.

Appreciate Dan (vroomed) for being a great teacher, ‘Star’ knowledge, patience, and amazed at sharing his time and dedication. Also for zachbyrne for being one of my first traders.
There are so many amazing folks here. The advice, the PIFs, everything. One that stands out to is how approachable BeardedCarnivore is. Not only had he been overly-generous with his trading, but he's opened up additional avenues for collecting for me. Without saying, admin has probably had the most impact on my current way of collecting, just setting up a ridiculously amazing site. And finally, one blogger jumpstarted my collecting after being out of the hobby for so long - NightOwl. Not so much his presence here, but I'd be remiss without mentioning.
Thanks to TCDB I found FlyWheels and his awesome affordable group breaks. That community has been crazy with knowledge and helping finish sets.
| |
RefsInTheBack made me aware of this site. This site is such an incredible resource. I’ve had an account for a while but will be using it a lot more this year to add photos and start looking for trades. Thank you for the give away opportunity. If I don’t win I will be buying a hoodie.
Dyehardfan has been an instrumental resource when using this site! Also an awesome Royals fan as well.
For me, the site has provided exactly and everything I wanted. I had always been determined to figure out exactly what was in my collection. I felt it was necessary before I could really start refining it, especially after being away from the hobby for many years. The site was simple, functional, and easy to use. Now I have an idea what is in my collection and it's a constant tool for me in deciding what to buy next. It's invaluable!!
Trading with dmarek (Dave Marek) on TCDB has been great for adding to our PCs and developing a friendship over cards.. He has always been helpful, positive & willing to go the extra mile to help others.
I must show appreciation to 3bcollection and zachbyrne along with all of the Hobby Evolution "Couch People". While I had been using TcDb for a while, I had not gotten involved in trades through the TcDb community. After hearing both of them discuss the ease of adding cards to their PC's through these trades and growing their online community, I decided to become more involved last Thanksgiving. I started by putting a few cards in my for sale/trade lists and was amazed at the activity that created. I completed my first trade on Dec. 5 and am approaching 30 trades so far. My goal is to get to 100 trades by the end of the year with at least one from all 50 states.
vrooomed and I added most of the images on a Topps Pro Debut set and he answered a number of questions I had as we went through that process which was very helpful.
I haven't had any sour moments here on TCDB since I really got into it about 6 months ago. Everyone's been extremely helpful and seems to be driven in the same way as me and I love it. So shout out goes to yrrcwc who keeps coming back with great trades and knows exactly when I'm ready to dive into another trade
The giveaway is now closed to new entries and the drawing will be happening shortly
The following members will be entered into the drawing thanks to their acceptable entries: TwinKiller They will be listed in that order (order of entry) on Wheel of Names. I'll then have it draw a name to pick a winner, remove the winner, and repeat the process two more times to draw our three names. Once that's done I'll update the forum thread with the winners and contact them via DMs to get their addresses and prize choices. Good luck and thanks to all who participated!
Final results: The wheel spins were witnessed by Corky, FiresNBeers, and vrooomed. The following were randomly selected by Wheel of Names:
Congrats to the winners, whom I'll be contacting shortly, and thanks again to everyone who made this a fun giveaway and filled the entries with kind words about their fellow members! |
