I certainly believe that TCDB got it right in terms of inventorying the sets that I collect. My initial forum question is directed at the collector in most of us opposed to the dealer in some of us. Some people completely ignore Traded/Update sets in their personal collections--I did for almost 15 years. Heck, some people even ignore Base sets.
For those interested in the topic of Traded/Update sets enough to view this forum, my question refers to your thoughts on how you collect these sets. If you're storing them all in their original box unopened next to each other, how do you view them? Do you view them? What makes them even fancinating enough to purchase? Are you just marking off a checklist? Are you still holding on to them like a stock? Or are they part of a missing piece to your base set like they are for mine.
My first set was the 1987 Topps set. I didn't get the '87T Traded set until 2001. Now the two are inseparable. I missed out on Greg Maddux's XRC, Reggie Jackson's XFC wearing an A's uniform, David Cone's XRC, Andre Dawson's 1st Cubs card, Dennis Eckersley's 1st A's card, Cal Ripken Sr. 1st card as an Orioles MGR, etc. No, I couldn't imagine storing an '87T Traded set in its box separate from my '87T collection, although I wouldn't change the way the sets are listed on this site or others. I couldn't imagine referring to any other card as Ken Griffey Jr.'s rookie than his 1989 Topps Traded card.
I'm interested on how the rest of the "collecting" community feels about Traded/Update sets, and their personal collections.
