I just received this card in the mail; I have other copies of it but the one I received has a white 1.5" square stuck to the center of the front of the card. Through the paper, I can see a labyrinth type diagram. I did peel back one corner and it appears that there is a foil under it. These cards were used as a promo to encourage kids to do well in school. I imagine if a teacher thought a child deserving, they handed the card to the child who could then redeem them at a local card shop for Topps cards.
Anyone know anything more about these with this white square stuck to them? Teachers?

I think I know what you're talking about. I never saw them on promo cards but only on the thick cardboard pieces they'd include in packs to prevent pack weighers from finding the good cards. I always assumed the squares were some sort of anti-theft device in packs.

This one is dead center of the Topps of the Class card. But your idea of the anti-theft makes sense. I never buy packs so cannot confirm if this was the case.

That's what I'm thinking too, anti-theft device. What you've described I've seen on the promo cards themselves in the past. You know, the days when packs existed in the stores....

Yes those 1.5" square white stickers are security "chips". Usuallyl they are on very thin plain white "cards" that are way too thin to even be cards. I think they are more often in retail boxes and often in the packs of retail blasters.
I have a few of the 2008 Topps of the Class David Wright cards that still have the white secuirty sticker. on them.

Are you talking about the RFID stickers?

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Chuck, that is probably what it looks like wiht the white paper peeled off. (What does RFID stand for? I thought I left the world of acronyms when I retired from the Air Force.)
