This 1991 Topps baseball card set is significant for a number of reasons:
1. This was the last year that Topps inserted bubblegum into its wax packs.
2. This was the last year that Topps even made wax packs--they turned to using cellophane packs by the end of the year, which would also be used for 1992 and 1993 packs.
3. This was the last year that Topps inserted Glossy Rookie Commemorative cards into jumbo packs.
4. This was the last year that Topps inserted Glossy All-Star Commemorative cards into rack packs.
5. This was the 2nd of three consecutive years that Topps released a Debut set. This wouldn't start back up again until around 2010.
This was the last year I collected baseball cards growing up before getting my driver's permit and heading into high school. Wax packs were only $0.50 and still promised lucky winners a trip for 4 to Spring Training as they had done for about decade. 40 years of Topps seemed like a big deal back then. What are your thoughts about collecting the 1991 Topps baseball card set, or during that era in general?

It felt like junk to me at the time, was tired of the gum, and wax stains, also had had enough of the cardboard stock since about '81 when the other guys started making theirs with white stock .
Looking back it's not so bad now, I cheated and got a factory set for cheap early on so I didn't buy many packs. I had been out of collecting for a few years, and Topps hadn't progressed much IMO at that time, UD, Score, and Pro Set was all the rage. Stadium Club came along shortly after, plus they dropped the grey cheap stock for the base set, and Topps had my attention again.

I had almost a full monster box (5,000-count) of these. That was one of 3 monster boxes that were ruined in a flood while I lived in Florida (pipe burst, not rain or nature). I don't have very many extras, but I do have a set - IIRC, at a show in FL, I traded a single card for all 5 sets (D, F, S, T, UD) and a slew of wax boxes. (The card, 1990 Star Co David Robinson promo - 1 of only 100 made.) I liked the Topps set that year - after all, it was a bit more traditional after that horror story that was 1990.

Not a lot to say. I actually liked this set and am not sure why people dis the 40th anniversary thing so much. I never did, and never will, have a problem with plain old cardboard. And, bad as it was, I miss the gum.

I started collecting in 1990. I bought a lot of junk. I wish I had started collecting vintage cards then.

yep, I know a fellow who is trying to build a set of nothing but the backs with bold logo.
does anyone know any more about the bold logo backs, as in, were they found more in factory sets than in standard packs, or just a certain factory?
thanks, mark

I've noticed some bold label backs in my collection, but they didn't come from the factory sets or wax boxes that I recently opened.

This set brings back fond memories for me. It was probably the last set I collected in my childhood collecting days. I remember picking up a micro set as a kid and thinking they were the coolest thing ever. I need to look and see if I have many of the variations / errors.
I wasn't aware of the bold logo backs. I need to look to see if I have any. Just getting back into looking at my old collection and picking up some other cards along the way. I did come across 50 or so of the desert shield versions in a box I recently bought but they are mostly all commons.

1991 was the second year in a row that OPC used the Topps logo on the front of the card. Usually, OPC would replace the Topps logo with their own. You could only tell from the back of the card
