As a baseset collector, along with Gypsy Queen, I have been feeling the void for a couple months now. I've completed those sets. Buying vintage is expensive and only brings in a few cards at a time, especially if I buy a tobacco card or two. So I've been wanting to dig into something bigger and affordable, which is what got me into Gypsy Queen in the first place. But I can't do it. I've spent 45 years happy with the in-season sets. The Updates still feel like gimmicks to sell more cards. I don't need a second card of one player in a single year. And if I start now, I'll be chasing them all for however many years back. Nope. Gonna stick with my baseset policy.
But those of you who want them, enjoy!

AMEN Vvvergeer. the 7th series in the vintage sets were released as cards like all the other cards, but stores didn't want to carry baseball cards and Football cards as they both came out in September.

Robert “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped and summer was gone.” ― A. Bartlett Giamatti robertkimble.us/tradingcards

For me it is series 3 and a nice bridge over winter until series 1 for the next year arrives. It helps capture guys who are "rental" players that may only play half a season with a team. I also would love to see manager cards come back, but as long as it doesn't come at the expense of losing 30 players, I don't need all the league leader cards that are filler.

I placed my order today for a presell of the 2017 Topps High Series/Traded/Update set.
I agree with a lot of the comments above about wanting to see Manager's cards brought back. I'm not sure how Topps justified removing them in the first place. They are a critical part of the team. I actually wouldn't mind seeing the coaches recognized either--at least listed on the back of the manager's card.

I always find it fascinating how many former major league players there are on MLB coaching staffs. Usually the manager, pitching coach, and hitting coach (along with the trainer and mascot) get cards in MiLB sets, but I think it would be really cool to see, say, Billy Hatcher as a coach with the Reds, especially since he used to play for them.
Hey, now there's an insert set I could get behind! Players-turned-coaches, especially the ones with previous Topps cards, maybe kind of like Topps did with the Bowman/Topps insert set this year in Flagship?

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

Or maybe like the 1978 Managers. Now that was a great subset with the Then & Now photos. Do that as an insert set today and I would want them.
I agree with EbeSPN about the rental players cards too. Sometimes an important late-addition won't get a card in a team's uniform if not for the update set, if he's already gone again by next spring. And I'm a big fan of "wrong uniform" cards anyway.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I got a complete set of the Topps Traded until the year they only issued them in packs (1994?). Since then I've only picked up the Royals cards. I'll get those again this year but leave it at that. IF Topps would continue the numbering into the Updates, then they would have another complete set collector. We all have our own quirks and rules but for me since the numbers "change", I treat them like all the other different sets and only get the Royals cards.
Manager/coaches cards would be nice, and so would check lists in "proper" order. There are a lot of suggestions I'd love for Topps to do, but...

I have the checklist done, but I can't upload my Excel spreadsheet (bummer and I thought I had Level 5 permission...). I have added a link to the Topps checklist. If someone wants the spreadsheet, I'll email it to them and they can claim the points. The work is done.
