1991 Donruss Baseball Forum

I was one of those that helped Dan sort through this now massive master set.  I remember that for the blue cards, the VAR "Inc." or "Inc" was very easy to see but that on the green cards, it was less so.  Maybe that was because by the time I got to series 2, I was going buggy-eyed.  It became that the easiest difference to see was the different shade of green on the back.  The "Inc." version was lighter and flatter; the "Inc" version was on the darker green cards.  This also applied to the blue cards.  But I also remember having to convince myself on some cards whether there was a dot or not.

So move forward a year and I now have someone who is asking for 4 cards in trade which will complete (I think) his master set.  I know I have over 30 of every card when I include the 15 or so sets (hand-collated and both versions of the FS - probably over 40, talk about over-producing) and several of each shade of green for each card. I go looking for those 4 elusive cards and, lo and behold, now my eyes see "Inc." on all 4 cards (2 of each shade of green) I have set out for trade.  So I dig into my monster, monster box and pull the stack of cards of each and, yes they also all have "Inc." no matter what shade of green.  So, trying not to disappoint a fellow member, I pull all of my sets (happened to have them easily accessible as we just worked on the Grand Slammer inserts VAR) and each and every card of these 4 cards have "Inc.".  I looked at the scans that are on the site - they are from 2011 before the magnifying lens was available and when scanning ability was less clear.  To me, I am quite positive that 3 of them have "Inc." and the fourth is so fuzzy that I would not bet against it.

Long story to get here - I am asking that if anyone has any of the following 4 cards without the . at the end of Inc, please scan them and replace the images presently on the site.  I only know of these 4 cards because I had to try to pull them for a trade; there may be more but I also know some of the green backs don't have the "." immediately before and after these cards in the set.

To my fellow trader, sorry but personally, if these are the last 4 cards you need, I think you already have the master set.  Maybe someone will prove me wrong and send you the cards you need.

The fun never ends....

Here is another card that needs to beconfirmed to have "INC" (no dot). All my 34 cards have a dot no matter what shade of blue it is. It is the same with the 5 mentioned in this Thread above.  The ones above are all green cards but none have a clear image of the back to see the "INC" clearly.

As we have done the other years of Donruss' printing inconsistency, we have found some cards in each set that did not have all VAR.  I now believe some of the 1991 set are like this.  The sample size I have in these is not small so I put it out to the membership to prove me wrong on any of these cards by uploading a replacement image of the back of these cards (so that the zoom lens is then in effect).

I am now adding the links to the cards I am questioning in the first post so as to keep them all together.

As I stated previously, the fun never ends. I traded away 2 of each card in my extras of this set (I'll let him know and maybe he can weigh in publicly or privately).

As for what I saw... I made some scans.

First, let's look at 2 Jose Canseco cards - first the full cards, then a close up of the copyright area:

Here, you can see that the darker green back is missing the period while the lighter green has the period. This is what Bruno was referring to with the "each shade of green" and from when I went through my cards previously, this wasa distinct pattern, not a fluke.

Now, here are 6 Welch cards (and close up):

As you can see, I have (here) 4 darker backs and 2 lighter backs. I would expect the 4 darker backs to be without the period, but all 4 have it.

Granted, I don't have 100s of any one card (only 11 extras of Welch was the top for this 6-card sample), but I clearly have examples of both types of backs in my collection. Please check those cards!

I had entered that I had 2 of the Herr cards without the dot.  I went to pull them and it turns out they do have a dot.  I have 3 with the dot and none without.  I independently thought I had figured out the light/dark pattern but now am doubting my data entry.

You and me both...and Dan.  For those that have the two VAR, the two shades of blue or green is consistent.  But those I have listed in the OP do not follow that - they all have the dot. Frustrating but I think it is time we acknowledge that there are some without the VAR. I forget who I had traded with the first time I found these issues but I wonder if he can chime in and tell us if he ever found the no dot VAR of any of these.

Working backwards on these, I am now at #550.  So far thosein teh OP that have (xx) beside them have been confirmed that in the sample size between brackets, there is no VAR of "INC". The sample size consists of both (all) shades of green / blue backs.

All of the cards are being examined under a light / magnifying lens (wish I had it when I first went through all these Donruss sets).
