2000 Pacific Baseball Forum

A few weeks ago, I brought up some early Pacific printing plates, because I found a reasonable Shawn Green one on eBay and wanted to know if there was a particular reason it wasn't listed here. Long story short, membership as a whole pointed out that it was likely fake. I bought it anyway, because I was comfortable with the price point, and it makes a unique collectible in my Green collection.

I bring this up again because there is an IR out there right now to move an image around in the newly created Printing Plate sets for the 2000 Pacific set. However, to me, the images that are already posted look very similar to the one I got from the eBay seller. That being said, it's possible that these are legitimate. I honestly have no idea. But I have a funny feeling that these should be deleted and not listed here because they aren't actual printing plates, and it wouldn't surprise me if they came from the same eBay seller.

Unless someone has proof these were inserted in packs...remove the listing.  Beckett doesn't list any 2000 Pacific printing plates.  An image search for 2000 Pacific printing plate doesn't show a single graded plate.

Even if they're legit plates, if they weren't inserted in packs they don't get listed.

I noticed in the player i collect, Printing Plates for Pacific for 1997 - 1999 were added as well. There is no forum on them so unsure why they were added. Where did the cards come from? 

I don't have any printing plates, and have never paid much attention to them, but.... I thought that letters and numbers were "mirrored" on them.  When I clink on the link, I see everything in a "normal" view.

You're both right. The 1997-1999 timeframe is just outside of my initial request from a while back (I don't remember exactly but I think it was 2001). The one I bought from eBay, I'm 99% sure is fake - rather, someone made an imprint of the card on metal. Yes, it's a fun oddball addition to my collection, but it doesn't belong here.

The same user who added the 2000 Plates referenced at the beginning of this thread also added the 1997 ones - and I would assume the others, though I didn't check. I was between 3 and 6 years old when these cards/plates were released, so I don't know much about them. I especially have no idea how they were issued. But my gut says that these aren't real and should be removed from this site. As I mentioned before, I wouldn't be surprised if they came from the same eBay seller mine did.

It always depends on the process used in making the card. For instance, the printing plates for paper Topps and Bowman cards have a normal orientation; however, the plates used in printing the Chrome counterparts are reverse oriented. I'm not quite familiar enough with the process to explain any further, and the only reason I know what I do is because I randomly met a guy that worked at a printer that Panini uses/used in Dallas and asked him about it. It would pretty cool to get a full explanation some time.

It depends on the printing process that is used. Years ago only the direct fimage transfer rom printing plate to cardstock process was used. The image on the plate had to be the reverse or mirror image of what was intende to be printed due to the process of inking up the plate, and the ink being directly applied to the intended printing surface from the plate. The new process uses rubber rollers that if I follow the difference of the processes right the rollers reverse the image from the plate and then reverse the image again to print to the paper or cardboard stock. One process is called Offset Printing. The descriptions I've seen for that seem to be the old fashioned mirror image plates version. I  don't know what they are calling the other printing method that doesn't require the reverse image.

1. Pacific never inserted printing plates for baseball.

2. I'm against having any non-pack issued printing plates listed, unless it has printed, stamped, or sticker information from the manufacturer on the back.

Those plates are 100% bullshine and we’d be doing a great disservice to the hobby by allowing them to be listed here.
