Bison Dele Forum

Brian Williams changed his name to Bison Dele only four years before his assumed death, and only one season before his retirement, making him known by his Bison moniker only a fraction of his life and his career.  Will someone with the know-how please fix it so that his primary name PID is Brian Williams and subsequently just linked to Bison Dele.  Thanks!

In skimming the site's guidelines for this sort of thing, I think you're right.  I can't figure out how to do this (I tried) but it seems that Bison Dele should be added as an alias with Brian Williams as the primary name considering the vast majority of his cards are under the Brian Williams name.

This is an Admin-only function. I have submitted an IR and marked it for Admin.

I have received a response from Admin. The name on the PID will not be changed.

Admin's response: That is the name he wanted to go by. It would be disrespectful to change it back.

I find it extremely difficult to believe that Admin would actually give that response. There are 213 Brian Williams cards and 52 Bison Dele cards in the DB. This means that 80% of the time anyone searches for all Brian Williams cards in the Name directory, nothing is there. That is a disservice to the members here, especially the new ones who may not have ever heard the name Bison Dele. I submit that we not worry about "offending" the late Mr. Dele with a simple semantic improvement, and focus on keeping this site elegantly practical.

That's weird (not really). I entered Brian Williams into the search and voila, took me to the right page. I do believe Admin gave that response. If he changed his name legally (think Ron Artest to Metta World Peace) then it is perfectly appropriate to annotate that here. Doesn't matter the balance of cards they have. Not sure how it's doing anyone a disservice when it actually help the community. Players change their names and people may not know of the previous or current name.

I copied and pasted that response - which was the entire response - directly from the message I received when he closed the IR, so I'm sorry you feel that I wouldn't give truthful information. With the exception of my note below, I will refrain from providing aid to members in the future since I am apparently not reputable enough to do so. 

Your third sentence is incorrect. Search for Brian Williams under "Basketball". Click on the first (and only) result for "Brian Williams". It takes you to the same PID. "Brian Williams" is currently an alias under PID #8295, and his cards can be found by searching for either name that he went by.

If you still disagree, feel free to submit an Inaccuracy Report on one of the cards explaining your reasoning, and another L8 member can mark it as "Admin Needed" so that you can get an answer that you actually believe from Admin.

First, Jason..STOP, my friend. I am not attacking you personally! You can repost anything at will at any time. I only expressed my difficulty in believing the response itself, not you. 

Second,      Browse / Basketball / Names / W / Williams......and... no Williams, Brian.  Where did you search, jimetal?  This is the problem.  If I am someone who hasn't heard of Bison Dele, I am stuck.

You are right that when you search just "Williams", Brian Williams is not in the list.  But if you enter "Brian Williams", he is the first hit.

I suspect it has to do that Brian Williams is listed as an alias so unless you search the full name, it doesn't appear.  I personally always enter both names in the hope that it is the first hit as some names have pages of players with the same last name.

In the search box right at the top of this page type "Brian Williams" with the drop down set to basketball.
