Thanks Mark for posting this. Everything I have ever seen of him portrayed him as a class act on and off the field. I mostly remember him as the Manager for the Expos.

I recall him as having a quiet intensity when he managed the Astros.

I heard on tv that he was fired as manager by yankees when Billy Martin became available, even though Virdon was Mgr of year the previous year.....and that he was fired from Pirates after a poor year the year after Clemente passed away... that is quite a bit of adversity during those years.... mark

RIP Bill Virdon.. I mostly remember him as the Pirates Skipper.. ------------------------------- Collecting cards for over 50 years..

Just read a nice write-up that mentioned Virdon was the first Houston manager to lead his team into the playoffs.

I didn't realize until I read his obituary that he retired in 1965, then came back in 1968 for six games when the Pirates were short handed due to injuries. He went one for three with a homer and two strikeouts.
