I remember one year John Andretti after 11 years in Cup got a Busch ride in 2006 and was eligible for Rookie of the Year.

Eligibility. Drivers must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible to run for or receive the Rookie of the Year award. Must have run no more than five (prior to 2001) or seven (2001–present), and have been declared to race for driver points in that series (2011–present), races in any previous season.

For the Kurt Busch scenario, it would still be points, no seniority. If there are 17 winners and other 16 are higher in points, they get the spots. He does have the waiver to miss the first 2 races of the playoffs, and still be eligible for second round if he can win to advance in race 3, but only in the scenario that he stays in the playoff picture.
News today that alters Kyle Busch's chances elsewhere is Aric Almirola WILL return for another season in the #10 and not retire at season end, so that ride that was open has now closed for Kyle.

Kurt announced he was withdrawing from the Playoffs...
Says if he wasn't up to the challenge (physically)...
He didn't want to harm anyone else's chances......
Still lots of questions about his future....

Wishing the best for Kurt
Scenario seems a little odd

How about that Daytona race Sunday? That was a wild one! That was way crazier than I expected. I certainly didn't see the pole-sitter and defending champion out of the race 20 laps into it without a wreck happening!!! I wouldn't have picked him in my fantasy game if I even thought that was possible. I really thought a driver that already had a win this season would win the race and it looked like that for most of the race. Then the instant downpour took out about half of the field. After the nearly 4-hr. rain delay, only 3 of the remaining drivers on the lead lap had a win (Cindric, Reddick, Busch). Rowdy was too damaged to matter though. Once Dillon bumped Cindric out of the way and Reddick caught up to him, I knew Dillon was going to win the race. Still sucks that Truex is out of the playoffs after being Top-5 (or 6) in points standings and only out by 3 points. I am glad that Blaney got in though. He's had a really good season, just couldn't pick up a win. I'm betting he gets one in the playoffs though.
The playoff 16 is an interesting mix this year though: 8 of the 16 are Chevy with all 4 HMS cars and both cars for Childress and Trackhouse. Toyota has 3 of the JGR cars and Ford has 5 cars: all 3 Penske cars and the SHR cars of Harvick and Briscoe. I expect the first 4 out of the playoffs to be Bell, Bowman, Briscoe and Dillon (ABC order). I think Cindric or Byron could be one of those 4 though.

With so many needing a win to get in...
It was actually a race....
The rain crash will be whined about for years, but what can Nascar do......
Different car this year, but can't forget the mistake they make with Kyle's car last year
that put him out of a race after just a couple laps....

Bowman, Briscoe, Cindric, and Dillon would be my first 4 out. I think Bell has matured enough over the last few races to know what he needs to do and moves on.
As far as the rain crash, I don't think there was much NASCAR could have done. How much would we be gripping about it if NASCAR had thrown a caution, before there was rain on the track? No win either way for NASCAR.

I think you're right. I think both Byron and Bell have gotten a lot better already so I'm expecting them to maybe make a deep run.

I swore we would not get 16 winners in the first 26 races but it happened. I seriously don’t get the Austin Dillon hate. He is not a hall of famer but he is likely going to have a Jamie McMurray type career. Also can we stop viewing RCR as a top tier destination. It’s not and it hasn’t been for quite sometime.
Put this under damned if you do and damned if you don’t. The rain, if NASCAR puts the flag out for the threat of rain and it doesn’t rain then they get ridiculed for ruining the flow of the race. It also could have been that it started raining and the cars wouldn’t have had time to stop regardless if they put the flag out. However I see the complaining. This is year three of this happening. Something needs to change. This shouldn’t be a yearly occurrence.
Hate the playoffs or not if this was the old system and Ryan Blaney and Martin Truex Jr were within a shot of the title, there would be lots of complaining from journalists, bloggers and comments about how it’s ridiculous a driver with zero wins has a chance of winning the title. There was complaining in the 90s and early 00s about the system. It changes and suddenly it was the best thing ever. It wasn’t but that is my opinion.
