I was sitting here answering massage on the website then I was going to hunt for missing cards. When my lower back started hurting. Nothing new for me having a messed up lower back from a car accident. I usually get up walk around, stretch a bit and it's fine. But after 30 minutes the pain got way worse. Spending head bad, I'm on fire!!! Bad. I called an ambulance. I thought I was going to pass out from the pain, so I went outside on the porch to wait for them. I did not want them to have to kick in the door and find me on the floor somewhere in the house and if I pass out on the porch. They will find me faster and I won't have to replace the door. I almost had to crawl but I made it. I flopped into the chair shaking uncontrol from the pain. The ambiance got here and they gave me fentanyl for the pain, but it really did not do much at the time. They keep asking me if the pain is subsiding? NO! I keep answers through gritted teeth and sweating like a man that ran 100 miles. It took around 20 minutes to kick in, by then I was in the Er and I think they gave me more or something else. After a cat scan. It turns out I had a kidney stone. 3 hours later I pissed it out into the little cup and they sent me home.
Now I've been in a really bad car accident when I was younger almost lost my right arm. lost an inch in height and have many dead spots on my body where I've crunch the nerve-ending. We rolled a car 7 times and I was thrown out the side window and it was closed. 38 stitches alone to put my scalp back down. That was a 1 compared to the pain of that tiny little rock.
The good thing was the timing. The hospital is not busy at all with this wu-han virus scare. I was in the CT scanner in less than 20 minutes and had the answer to what was wrong within the first hour. But I could not leave till I gave them the rock in a little cup. I almost drank a 1/2 gallon of water and 3 hours later they had the rock in a cup. It was so small about 2/3 the size of a Q on the back of a quarter. That little thing Created all that pain? I was expecting something bigger than that. Drink more water the doctor said now that you have had one the changes of you have another are higher. So drink more water.
I also found out like always, it's not like the movies or tv shows. You have all the pain when it leaves the kidney. The doctor said I passed a kidney stone, now I just now have to evacuate it, but you won't feel that pain because you're drugged up. I ask her, "how much does that hurt?" She said that depended on the size and shape. But it is usually not to bad.
I don't know if any of you have been through this. But take a really bad toothache times it by 1000 add fire and a fastball to the crunch. I HOPE none of you ever have one.

I have had that twice so far in my life. The last time was 2 years ago. It started to come on and I thought...I know what this is. Very uncomfortable no matter what position you are in before it passes. I have a few more up there that haven't started to transfer down so I'm sure I'll have it again at some point. They suck.

I've passed one about 15 years ago. And it was painful for pretty much a whole evening and passed it the next day.
A few weeks later I was talking with a friend and his wife and she said she'd passed a kidney stone and claimed it hurt more than when she gave birth to her children. Well I've taken that and run!
Ever so often I'll joke with ladies that I've experienced pain greater than giving birth and that I have a woman's perspective to back me up. They don't like hearing me say that, and it's all done in good-natured jesting.
But it is painful depending on the size of the stone and the amount of pain reliever in your system.
Good that you're done with it, RJ.

Wow RJ, glad to hear you're doing better but what an ordeal! I know exactly what you mean. I had one about 14 years ago that sent me to the ER and I eventually passed it. Then, three years ago, I had surgery to remove one that was 2 centimeters (about the size of a golf ball!). Be sure to drink lots of water and my doctor also said drinking lemonade can help prevent stone formation.

I've heard something similar to that Commish. I heard that it's the closest a man will ever experiencing the same amount of pain as a woman giving birth. After witnessing both and reading RJ's account, I agree. But I do like your example since women tend to hold that over men's heads all the time (not that I care too much since I don't ever want to give birth after witnessing my wife give birth to my children). Anyway, glad to hear you're okay, RJ.

Last November I went to the er at major hospital in Boston. I knew I had the start of a small bowel blockage. I've had them at least a dozen times before and 3 prior surgeries. They did all the usual tests, and had me sitting around all night. And sent me home. The said it's not that bad ! I went home, called the ambulance and went to the VA hospital in Boston. Four hours after arriving I was in surgery. Yes, grown men do cry from pain. It's scary as hell living alone now.

RJ, I agree....Pain worse than natural child birth [I've been told, lol] I've had kidney surgery, ureter surgery all in an attempt to stop the annual attacks. I even have meds I take to halt the formation of stones.
Strange story, but my attacks always kick in around now to @July 4th....I asked the Doc...he told me stay away from drinking Iced tea, huh! Anyway, my ER trips were getting so common place, that I was telling the ER doctors what Med to give me, skip the 1st 3 just give me------Dilaudid, Only one that worked for any length of time. Feel Well Bro, ~bob~

Thank you, everyone, for the replies and PM's
I'll be doing the lemon thing. I don't want to go through that again.
After I wrote that, I ate and went to sleep and woke up 12 hours later. That was a lot of sleep for someone that normally sleeps 4 to 6 hours. Feeling good today, I do feel a little sore. But that will pass.

3 years ago I had my very first kidney stone. As everyone has described, the pain was unreal. The first time I went to the ER, the CT scan didn't find anything because the DR forgot to order the dye test to help detect it. Since they couldn't find a stone they told me to come back if the pain recurred. In their mind, it may have been something else.
Six hours later I was back in the ER in just as much pain as before. This time they found the little rock in the CT scan because they did it right. What was ironic was the first time I went they treated me like royalty - had my own room in the ER and a "concierge" of sorts visited me a couple of times to make sure I was ok. Second time, they left me in the hallway with all the other opiod/meth heads who were there for the pain killers.
It took almost a week for that thing to pass, and I had several more painful episodes, but none as bad as the first two, so I gutted them out.
Funny thing is, I think I can sense one brewing - I'm chugging water and hoping I can get it to pass less painfully than my first.

I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing when you've admitted to the hospital and all the nurses keep saying I remember you.
