I think he’s in. Fifth ballot or later. But, as others have said, big stats, big moments, big personality, SNL skits. Delayed by DH and steroids, but by then people will start to be over the steroids thing.
Looks like it’s about tied, so far. If the voters do that, he won’t make it.

Have to say yes, the numbers as well as milestones, WS, team, and personality gives him a plaque and his name in the books.

I think he's a sure thing. He won 3 World Series. He's immensely popular, liked by the media, and hit 500 home runs. I'm so tired of people saying that a DH doesn't belong in the HOF, but at the same time they have no problem with an AL pitcher getting in when he doesn't bat. Let's be consistent; if were going to measure players by rules that existed before they were born, let's apply it to the DH and the pitcher alike. The DH has been around since 1973. Ortiz wasn't born yet in 1973. I wasn't born yet in 1973. I'm not going to base my opinion of him on an era he didn't play or live in.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Funny, I have a similar collection as vroomed though I do still collect players that never made it into the Hall. If I liked them enough when they played the game, then I keep their cards with the HOF. As for Big Papi, I am completely with Glenn both on the opinion that he should not get in and that he will because of where he played. Too many better players are ignored because they did not play in NY, Boston or LA while others get in only because they played in those media markets. I wish the voting was removed from biased reporters and given to the HOFs already in.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Just for the record, here are the players I didn't collect, and had to pull out when they were elected:
- Eddie Murray
- Jeff Bagwell
- Tim Raines (collected at one point, put him back in commons, thought he wasn't going to make it)
Players I collect because I liked them and don't care that they might not (or won't) make the HOF:
- Jack Morris
- Dale Murphy
- Don Mattingly
- Pete Rose
- Mark Grace
- Wally Joyner
- Will Clark
There are others who have retired more recently, so we'll have to see, but I think players like Jeter and Chipper are first ballot types, so there's no real debate there. Vladimir Guerrero, Omar Vizquel, and Todd Helton are another story. We'll have to see about them.
After reviewing Ortiz's stats, I thought they lent themselves to him getting in, but with the PED thing, it might hurt his chances. After all, Bonds & Clemens haven't gotten in (yet?), and they definitely have the HOF numbers.

Other than Joyner, they are all on my list. The three you had to pull were already in my collection when they got in. I do have about 7 or 8 players that I pulled but are in a separate box as "I don't think so (read (I would not vote for them) but they might get in becauseof where they played - this includes Schilling and Ortiz".

Of course he's getting in. He helped break the Curse of the Bambino by taking the Red Sox to 3 World Series victories. Those playoff runs (6 of his first 7 years) started when he got there. Forget about all that DH talk. It's not going to matter. The question is if Ortiz is getting into the Hall of Fame, and he's getting in. Deserving or not. It just is what it is.

Correct. AL has the DH. A guy who hits instead of the pitcher. NL has pitchers who bat.

I had NO clue!! I knew there was a DH in baseball but thought all teams had them and they could be used to replace anyone at anytime (kind of like a pinch hitter(?) ) Again, the last year I even watched a full game was when the Expos still existed.
