What do the letter/number rectangles mean on the back of Upper Deck cards?

These have been appearing on the back of all UD's sports card since the 2006-07 NBA and NHL season. I have no idea what purpose they serve. They do not appear on the non-sports cards they produce, at least not the Marvel Cinematic Universe cards I have in my collection.

I've cropped down an example from an NBA and NHL card to show. The VM7VG and K3EWX is what I am referring to.

So anyone know what these are there for?

According to a post on reddit one person claims them to be a production code.. however Upper Deck apparently no longer has a site up which can provide any info regarding the code. Hope this is of some help.

These were Upper Deck Kids codes! You could go online and enter them and earn various points redeemable for rewards. It was the first forum I was active on, and eventually I earned enough points to redeem for a box of 2008 First Edition baseball.

But yeah, it was an Upper Deck gimmick for kids back from 2006 onward.

it was redemption codes for Upper Deck Kids. which was awesome if you were a kid collecting but then all the hobby shops started redeming codes like crazy. by the time i saved enough for a box, they had all been redeemed. i did get a few "rewards" but nothing substantial.

I did...cool! Last time I looked they were at Sea Otter Place.
