It seems to me that there are 3 items here:
1)The card shown above which is the player and the quarter embedded into the card showing the state side of an unpainted quarter
2) One of the links showed what appeared to be a card showing info on the player and showing an image of the quarter back. It does not have the actual quarter emended into the card like #1 is
3) The painted quarters themselves where the player's image was painted on the quarter over George Washington's portrait.
As to the real state Quarters. I too collected them as they came out from pocket change. Most of mine are in pretty good shape, some probably should be upgraded. I purchased a very cheap display book for them that is OK but there were better quality holders/books available. Mine barely holds the quarters and I think it is Montana that always tends to pop out of its plastic tray slot. I also saved an extra Maryland state quarter or two since it is my home state. Those I put in and wrapped in a clear plastic baggy and taped it closed. After they finished minting the states series I collected the 6 territories set they put out that included the Washington DC quarter. Those were an extra set so they have no places in the state quarter holders/books. Any sets they have minted since then I have not collected. The National Parks set I forget how many they have of those.
I collect: Baseball, Football, Hockey, Mostly Vintage pre1980, My Homie teams - Washington/Baltimore Teams Senators (Twins, Rangers), Expos/Nationals, Redskins, Capitals, Bullets/Wizards - HOFers - Non-sport (mostly TV shows and movies).
My Trade List is very much a work in progress
