I was going to help out by creating and submitting checklists because it looks like there is a backlog of insert and parallel sets. Is Cardboardconnection.com a good reference for doing these or is there a better place to look? I remember downloading an actual spreadsheet file for a set once but I can't remember where it was I got it from?

Please verify the card numbers on the actual cards before uploading it. Also please be sure the checklist you are uploading includes all the cards in the set, the correct names, the correct teams, and any Notes that are supposed to be associated with the various cards. Basically, the ideal scenario is you upload the checklist and no further edits are needed. Thank you for helping out!

I do like cardboardconnection.com, but there can be one issue. Often times card companies (especially Panini) release a checklist with incorrect numbering, usually with cards having initials instead of numbers. CC usually just posts the checklist as-is and doesn't fix the errors. This is more a problem with the card company than Cardboardconnection. The player lists are generally correct. Check eBay, COMC, etc. to see if the numbering system on a CC checklist is correct.

For baseball lists, I've found BaseballCardPedia.com to be pretty accurate
As Greg said, be careful with CardboardConnection when they use numeric lists. You'll see checklists on this site that were copied from there then needed to be edited afterwards, so we end up with something looking like this: 1, 2, MEM-AJ, 4, MEM-BC, 6 ....

Ultimately we want the number in our database to match the "number" that is on the back of the card. So if it says DFS-AB on the back of the card that what we put down, not a number and not just AB, correct?

OK so I picked 2016 Rookies and Stars Dress for Success. Each card has a patch and Auto and is serial number to 49. Sample file above I hope you can see it
I checked on COMC and the number on the back is DFS-AC for the players initials. COMC didnt have pictures of all the cards in the set so I assumed(I know dangerous) they would follow that pattern. I checked for duplicates and saw that Conner Cook and Corey Coleman both had CC. I have seen in other sets that they go 3 wide to make them different. COMC had Conner Cook so I saw that he had -CC. I couldn't find a back image of Corey Coleman so I would put in as -CCO. How is that?
Couple other questions:
Can the Notes all be in one cell like above or do they need to be one cell per note
Does it have to be an Excel file? I use Open Office Org Calc and I can save the file with a .xls extension but is there something inherant to Excel that the site is looking for when its imported?

As pointed out, try not to assume what the card number is. A lot of work done on this site is correcting card numbers because of assumptions or blindly copy and pasting from other site without verification. Better to hold off on the upload until it can be verified.
All notes can go into one cell
OptionS to import are below. Before the final upload you can view what it'll look like before hitting the system. That way if there is a mistake it can be corrected.
Text Import |
- Imports card number and name fields only
|
Text Import Plus |
- Imports card number, name, team, and repeating note fields
|
Excel Import |
- File must be Excel 97-2003 or higher
- Can import card number, name, team, and note fields
|
XML Import |
- File must be saved as XML Spreadsheet
- Can import card number, name, and team fields

Please don't guess. I'll quote the very first sentence of my first reply in this thread:
Please verify the card numbers on the actual cards before uploading it.
I thought that was pretty clear, no?

If you have all the card numbers except a few. Just ask here and members may be able to find them or even have them. Yes there are a few sets that has 2 of the same card number. So there may be 2 DFS-CC
