That's pretty much why I stopped buying wax. I'm a set collector and just not cost effective doing it this way. While buying a FS or HC isn't as fun sure saves a bunch on the wallet that can be used for other cards.

Four way tie:
Exclusive licenses.
Small sets. The largest NBA set is 300 cards, there are 525 players in the league, for example.
Needing a lot of cards from a set, opening a pack and getting only duplicates. Even worse if you buy a whole box and get a bigger stack of duplicates than number of cards missing.
The term "junk wax". You know automatically that anyone who uses the term is a flipper, not a collector or fan of the sport/subject of the cards. You can't really have a conversation with them because you know they are in it for the money.
I would have said buying single cards, but that can be fun, when you are knocking out the last couple cards needed to complete a set for example.
-------------------------------
VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. Trying to stay within a reasonable budget with my collection.
Space. I have 2 walls in my garage storing my collection as well as a room in the basement.
I will disagree with Billy a bit. I use the term junk wax but it is my favorite era. It's the best era for affordability. I also believe the termed era has gained a lot of love over recent years.

Definitely the new monopolies, called "Exclusive License", have ruined it.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I, too, am a set collector. My biggest challenge is trying to find complete [or factory] sets. I get that the manufacturers want to sell hobby boxes. But I can get SOME factory sets shortly after release.

I give my son an allowance (not a lot) for helping out. He doesn’t play video games so he really only does stuff with me and cards. He does not expect an allowance and is grateful when he does get it. But he can’t really buy any box of cards. So he saves up and hopefully we can get to a card show soon.

The collecting and trading parts are the most fun. However, pulling oddball cards for a trade is my least favorite. As much as I try to organize my trade list, there is always one I have filed incorrectly and have to search for it I always find it, but the search is frustrating.

For me the worst is trying to figure out the Boman numbering systems. Is my card BP, BCP, BTP, BFC, XYZ? And I agree with all the stupid VAR. If there is a SP or VAR let's have something different and special, not the same exact card with a different border or whatever. I don't need or want 5 different versions of the exact same card. Wow that felt good to rant!
