It would be interesting to see what airbrushing with archival grade ink would do. Probably not something everyone has the equipment to do but it might be interesting. I would definitely put the cards in sleeves, though. Especially if you spray the inside.

If it were me I wouldn't do that. Paint chips and could get onto the cards, by the time you unfolded them paint them let them dry you would spend more time doing that than just buying new boxes and you also lose the risk of damaging the cards.
Who says you should pay for them all at 1 time get a box or a few boxes per paycheck that way it won't cost you a lot at one time or buy a lot off of e-bay
that is my opinion

My cheapskate way around yellowed boxes or ones with writing on them is blank self adhesive labels. When they're sitting on my shelf all I can see is the end anyway. When I have resorted or consolidated cards in the past I just slap a new label on it and it's good to go. Amazon has several options.

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to spray paint them. Too much of a risk of some chemical leeching into the cards. I like the idea of getting a few boxes here and there. My wife said it best, "Sort out the cards you're going to trade or sell and don't buy boxes for those. Buy boxes only for what you're going to keep." Smart lady.
Thank you for your help and advice.

That's what I ultimately ended up doing, but it was to get rid of my odd sized boxes. I picked up 40 800 count boxes on Amazon for like 30 bucks or so (I think lol). I find the 800s fit my storage a lot better.

I've used flat latex wall paint to paint boxes, with success (thus far). I used a small 3" roller and rolled all the sides of the box and the top, along with the top of the top. This provides a smooth finish. I never paint anything on the inside. Then I can write on the edge. Never had a problem with yellowing or chipping/peeling paint. I store all my cards in penny sleeves and rigid toploaders. My opinion is the corrugation provides a layer of protection from leeching.

For set boxes, I usually tape a wax pack wrapper on the end. It also sturdiest them up by covering it with a couple layers of packing tape. You could add a few different ones on 1600 count boxes.
