In the 1970's it is alleged that a multi millionaire UCLA Basketball program supporter, possibly by the name of Sam Gilbert, paid members of the basketball team for mafia style no show jobs.
This ruling opens the door for that kind of major program abuse. Big programs, with big donors, will get players based on how much money can be arranged.
The major sport athletes and the teams they play for, at the major schools will benefit, at the expense of the small schools / small programs.
The minor sport athletes are unlikely to benefit. Swimmers, divers, water polo, crew, fencing, lacrosse, rugby and so on.
Banning compensation, and harsh penalties for non compliance, had the effect of "evening the playing field," and some increased competititveness, across programs in major college sports. A basketall program such as Gonzaga with Mark Few as coach, couold attract talent equal to UCLA, Kansas, North Carolina, Duke and other major schools with big donors.
