This is similar to what I like to do. I got the idea from a blog entry, and for the life of me couldn't tell you who would post it. But they would basically stash cards away from COMC when they got them, and when they needed a blog post they'd put together a "COMC blaster" and show off $20 worth of cards (purchase price).
That's how I go about it. I go to eBay and search for PC players with free shipping on the auctions. I set my max bid at $1.00 and move on. If I get it, great. If not, oh well. Or, for instance, the other day, I set my calculator at $10.00, and started going through a different PC player and purchasing everything under $0.50. Plenty of cards that fit that criteria for Shawn Green. I subtracted for each card I bought, and stopped when I got to $0.00. Basically, for $10.00, I purchased (and will eventually receive, when I decide to ship) like 22 or 23 cards that I actually wanted.
Ripping packs is fun, but being stuck with 85 cards that I really have no use for isn't all that thrilling. I'd rather bargain hunt and/or spend a little less to get cards I truly need and want. Anyway, a little off-topic. But that's my way of going about it anymore.
I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.
