Photo Storage Boxes are really cheap at craft and dollar stores. Well-made, designs [even sports] or plain [for your own art], and a place for a label. Many come with dividers. The larger ones can be quickly converted to multiple rows as well. I use mine as actual drawers, very neat, very sturdy.
Gotta send a shoutout to Bruno aka sandy, I luv the idea of converting old storage furniture into card storage units. I was so impressed with his cabinet, that I'm jazzing up an old small dresser for storage. Thanks Bruno !

If you're able to find them, card catalog drawers from libraries make as useful storage as well. That's provided you're able to remove the rod at the bottom of the drawer and have the space for them. Most of them are pretty sturdy as well. They can generally be found at surplus sales from city, county and state governments as well as surplus sales at colleges and universities.

Been on the lookout for a library cabinet, but having no luck here in our town. The older high school doesn't use them, but will not let them go. They are beautiful pieces of furniture, too, so I don't blame them.
Curious about the photo storage boxes, too. I'm not sure what they look like so if you could post a pic that'd help, Bob.

If anyone here on the site lives near College Park, MD, the University of Maryland has a surplus sales facility in the old Washington Post printing plant. Not sure if they might have anything of use for the hobby though.

How much is the 4 X 6 X12?
My opinion has been that buying boxes designed to fit and protect the cards isn't really that expensive but I'm willing to look at this with an open mind.
I would be curious to know cost and how many cards you think would fit in this box. Do you just insert cardboard as a row divider and is it a pain to then get the cards out? I had thought about collecting our empty copy paper boxes at work and cutting them down and using them with cardboard dividers but for me I think I'm find with buying various sizes of the boxes designed for cards but I also have to admit I am going to smaller boxes because I don't really like moving around 5000 count monster boxes anymore.

I could see these as being really useful for oversized cards or wax boxbottom card panels, or similar over-sized items. The label on the outside make it that much more interesting.

I use these type of boxes to store larger and odd-size items like postcards, photos, boxtoppers, etc.
They stack very nicely, too! The outside label makes organization a breeze!

i use these all the time while processing packs and boxes into my collection. found them to be pretty useful to be able to do a few packs at a time, and stack them neatly on my desk as i go along... i try to stock up on them right after back to school starts, because i can get them for $0.50 each. i must have about 100 of them stacked up in various stages of entering them, between starting out in my spreadsheets, to the DB, and then finally into The Card Collector program and then finally into boxes.
