That does such a disservice to accuracy...Admin, I'm officially asking to reconsider the rule that on some sets numbers aren't numbers. If the card sets want to be "cute" and number them by jersey numbers, we should not be ignoring that. That's really no different than Beckett making up numbers. Both ignore what's actually on the cards "because we said so". We should be...and usually are... better than that.
The skip number argument was used last time this came up...and was agreed with by most.

While I don't totally disagree with Billy's point and could see the case being made for some sets to be skip-numbered, I don't think that was ever intended with this set. It seems that someone, whether at Beckett or here or wherever, simply used the jersey numbers for identification purposes. I know I'm not doing a very clear job of explaining my view, but the best way I can sum it up is by looking at this card from the 1986 McDonald's Chiefs set. To me, the fact that the identifying labels are the exact same on the front and the back (#6 Jim Arnold P) tells me that this set wasn't meant to be numbered by jersey number.
Just my two cents.

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

Nope,it doesn't. #26 is his jersey number. In the present checklist he is card 31. So whoever entered the checklist had it right to put them in alphabetical order but shouldhave NNO'd the checklist.

Below is the checklist card that came with the set. If the jersey numbers were meant to be the card numbers, why weren't they included?

Remember that Pro Set Power football set where the first 99 cards were of players whose uniform number matched the card number?
For the record, I agree with Billy. If the uniform number is prominently displayed, and no card number is assigned, and you didn't own the complete set to know the numbers weren't consecutive, the uniform would appear to be a card number. Especially if the uniform number wasn't visible in the photo. Why would a collector look at such a card and think, "This card is a NNO"? On the McDonalds card, the # before the number might be a giveaway, but most don't use a #.
Furthermore, I could go along with the NNO argument IF uniform numbers were regularly displayed on the backs of cards that also had standard card numbers. But with a some notable exceptions (Pro Set and Sportflics come to mind), uniform numbers aren't typically included on the backs of numbered cards. And other than college football with its enormous rosters, uniform numbers aren't repeated on a team, so why not use those as card number in a team set? Height and weight likely are, because they aren't assigned. (We already have a 6'2 player, so we don't want you!). No sane person would sort cards by player weight. My brother went through a phase where he did, but I repeat, no sane person would do that.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I said I stopped caring, but...here's why the checklist argument doesn't work, for two reasons. 1. the checklists do not always match the cards. There are numerous instances where cards are missing from checklists, player's names spelled wrong, cards appearing on checklists that were never produced, or the cards not even in the proper numerical order of the actual cards. (All four of these appear in my collection, although I'd have to do some work to find the examples). 2. If the checklist is what we are going off of, then why aren't the cards posted in the same order they appear on the checklist?

The only difference between the checklist and the alphabetical order idea is that the checklist has the manager and 5 coaches listed first. After that, the players are in alphabetical order, again with no numbers.
But it ismy turn tonot care anymore. We willnever agree on this just like we can't have everyone agree if it is Fleer Ultra or just Ultra. Odd that it is just Ultra yet 1985-88 Leaf is Leaf/Donruss. No consistency because too many opinions are acted upon.
