Just wanted to get some feedback from everyone on what some of you consider a complete set in your collections. Does a complete set just involve the base set or do you also include errors and inserts in order to be considered complete?

Base set only without errors and variations, especially now when the companies do things intentionally.

I definitely don't include inserts, but errors, I still say no, but I'd like to have them.

I have never been much of a set builder, but when I revamped my collecting goals at the beginning of this year I decided to throw some together, such as the 1988 Fleer factory set that I had most of. For that one, because there were only a few inserts and variations, I want to get them all. Recently, however, I started my project of building all of the Topps Opening Day sets, beginning with this year and working backwards. Because of the 1/1s, inserts, etc in the Opening Day sets, I decided to limit myself to the base set, variations if I can get them (not going to go pay $20.00 for the same card with a different picture), and non-relic/autographed inserts only.
I have very completionist tendencies, so this might drive me crazy for a while, but I just have to accept that it's physically impossible to build most modern sets with all inserts, and sometimes with all errors as well. However, I know a lot of other members on here have different viewpoints and strategies too!

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

Base sets to me are all the cards in the set. All inserts, short prints, etc that are offered, are called part of the Master sets (base set + insertsSP, etc) to me..Hope this helps.....

Totally agree with BigOinPa on this. Happy to complete my base sets and do collect all of the others, just does not bother me if I collect the entire master set.
Which brings me to one of the only items that I disagree with on this site. I wish the errors, variations and ad cards could somehow be listed seperately. As a math teacher it drives me crazy when I see my complete set has 661 out of 660 cards. Small rant and it's over!!!

Seems unanimous so far. I, too, agree with BigOinPa. I guess I collect "base sets." If I happen to run into an obvious misprint, I tend to keep it (1979 Bump Wills, I think), but I might sell it to those quirky collectors who love those things. I ignore short prints and inserts and special other stuff. If there's card 660a, b, c, d, e, f, etc., I consider myself to have the complete "set" if I have any one of those. If there's some super-rare misprinted card that no one actually has, and I don't have it, I consider myself to have the complete set there, too (can't remember what fairly modern Topps baseball set I'm referred to here). When I buy my factory Topps baseball set each year, I sell off the five-pack of special inserts. I don't buy the Gypsy Queen short prints.
The only place this feels bad on this site is the Gypsy Queen situation, where I am considered to have 300 of 350 and it doesn't reflect a "complete" set. Whatever. It's "complete" to me.

I've always said the base set is the complete set. I consider each of the Unser s a separate set I can collect altogether and whatever i get while trying to complete the base is a bonus. If I want to complete an insert package, I consider it a separate set. I very rarely try to complete an insert set.
i agree that errors and variants should be considered separately on the site.
If you can subscribe to these definitions, being a set collector will be more fulfilling in that a goal is attainable. The only hard seYa to complete are things like Upper Deck hockey, where young guns are short printed, but are the only card for the roomies and are part of the set.

I don't consider any short print / error / variation to be part of the complete set. I'm happy to have them if I get them but my definition of complete often differs from this site due to numerous instances of serial numbered short prints being part of the complete set. Where multiple versions of a card exist such as error / variations, I consider one of them to go toward a complete set. As has been said, inserts etc. are part of the master set and I'm thrilled to get them, but rarely pursue them as a part of a set.

Let me try to answer your question as best I can. A base set lets use the one I am working on right now the 2016 Panini Classic Football set. This is a great set for someone who wants a nice football set for under $100.00 the set consist of the following 100 Base Veteran Cards 100 Legends Cards and 100 Rookie Cards and you have the base set of 300 cards. Now I decided to take on the challenge of building a complete "Master Set" and this has become the most challenging set I have ever taken on. You have the "Significant Signatures Set" these are autographed cards from 199-299 and some of these are very low print runs of 15 or less. You have add in "Blank Backs" Blue and Red Backs and you have 300 of each variant. I have been working on this monster for over a year and I am only 65% complete. If you are thinking about starting a collection of sets and do not want to have to buy box after box look on eBay and always pick up those Target Exclusive Topps Baseball Sets. Take Care
