And now, in a complete turnabout from my post the other day about finding sets you didn't know you had, it's the opposite.
How about a 1991 Topps baseball set????
In the height of my collecting, when I was trading Daqvid Robinson Nova promos (well, one) into $200 worth of trade, I didn't pick up a Topps set. I thought for sure I had it.
I just went to the last box I could go to for it - found 3 1991 UD 701-800 sets, a 1984 Fleer set, a partial 1984 Topps, a partial 1989 Donruss (missing like 6 cards), and 4 more 1987 Topps sets (to bring my extras to a total of 5!). But no 1991 Topps.

A complete 2015 Frederick Keys set. I went to pull a card to get it autographed, and couldn’t find it! Must have gone missing at a game, as I remember having it. Went on my wantlist shortly after.

Birthday cards count? I mean, if you get more than one it could be considered a set. And who hasn't found lost money in one of those?

LOL yes maybe .............. sorry I'm on a pre-easter sugar high ............ cadbury mini-eggs ............ YUM!
As for a serious answer yes I swore I had the trivia cards for the OPC sticker backs but I could not find them anywhere! My spidey senses tell me they may have fueled my Ranford collection at one point.

I have not had the situation of thinking I had a set that I did not, but I have had many ghost cards over the years. Part of my problem was when I got divorced in the late 90s, my wife (eventually ex) threw away about 75% of my collection, I call it "The Purge" so I had many cards that I did have at one time but perished to the divorce gods.

Plenty of times. I have also done the oposite (looks like BOB has as well) where I have the dang thing and end up buying another one cause I thought I didn't have it.

Never sets, but cards, yes.
Thought I had:
- 86-87 Fleer #82 Olajuwon RC (Purchased it since then)
- All Emmitt Smith RCs, but am missing 90 Topps Traded #27T & 90 Fleer Update #U40
- 89 Topps #293 Marino (Traded for it since then)
