“ I like the 2007 Topps flagship / Opening Day / Chrome set design, and the opening day logo is a nice add to the card. Not sure about this Beltran photo. What is going on. Is this some kind of ballet bunt attempt? ” -abide

“ One of the best opening day sets. Essentially a parallel of flagship. However, I still think the opening day brand is redundant and unnecessary. An example of the lack of creativity/recycling Topps demonstrated for so long that may have contributed to their doom. ” -chvlDm

“ 2007 Topps is one of my favorites. It was the first complete set I ever had. I usually don’t like bordered cards but the highlights in the corners and the reflective name makes it so much better. ” -pugchump

“ I really like how for opening day they made it white. Looks cool in my opinion. ” -TwinKiller

“ Superfluous ” -jayoneill

“ How many cards show a player strolling to first after a walk. Thousands of walks a year and you never get these cards! ” -Tscastle
  3
“ I always thought it was weird how 2007 opening day flipped the black border to a white one. ” -mkb

“ Not a bad ard, but it looks as if it is geared more towards youngsters than older collectors . . . ” -georgecf

“ Very nice card. No gimmicks. ” -NJDevils

“ A little too much noise for my liking. ” -muskie027

Ah yes...the old Topps Opening Day set.  Basically a way to update the flagship set before doing the actual Update Sett later.  Topps was dominant in the market at the time and did what they wanted.  It's an okay set as far as design.  Topps produces a lot of cards in all types of genres so this probably falls in the middle somewhere.

My first card pack as an 8 year old was of this set, and it was the one that got me into collecting. My goodness the memories.

If I am not mistaken, Topps creating the Opening Day set was specifically directed at pulling more children into the hobby, as Slug03 testified, and georgecf hinted at in the quotes above. The price point was around $10 for a blaster, half of the flagship package prices, and you still got a ton of cards. I am sure they reduced the production cost by making hardly any insert sets, reducing the amount of materials needed for the entire run as a whole. I bought, and still have, a ton of these 2007 OD singles, as that was the era in which I had tons of adult money, and time, for cards. Man, alot has changed in 14 years, in my life, and in the card hobby. I liked this set for many reasons, most significantly, the memories the design brings back for me. Ah, nostalgia.

-------------------------------

I sell my cards at the lowest current market rates (Ebay, COMC). The 450,000 cards I have were purchased entirely by me over a 33 year period, 98% of them opened by me from brand new factory sealed packages.

I only accept Cash or Postal Money Orders in the snail mail, Zelle (preferred), Paypal F&F, Venmo F&F, Cash App F&F. Gone are the days of me getting ripped off by dishonest buyers using protection policies as a way to have me pay for cards, shipping supplies, and shipping costs, and then get all of their money back without any questions.

My favorite "opening day" set of all-time is 1987 Donruss Opening Day. A set of the actual starting lineups from that year. Wish they had kept it up.

That border is just too wide.

As jdogg said back in the days when Opening Day was more than just a parallel with the "Opening Day" logo stamped on the front. It made wanting to hunt for the Opening Day set fun, now it's just another of a zillion parallels that aren't worth even looking at.

One of my favorite sets, I got a box of these at the huge Toys-R-Us in New York City when I was younger. 2007 was when I first got big into collecting as a kid, so might be my favorite nostalgic topps set. Might be my overall favorite if the borders where white like this instead of black.

regarding Abide's comment about what is happening in the action photo, it appears to me that he walked, and is about to toss the bat toward the batboy...

just my guess...
