MY FAVRITE SET | ||
1984 Topps was the first, that I remember, pack of cards I bought. I was probably 5 years old. My grandmother would walk to 7-11 with my sister and me. Dragging behind us a wagon filled with empty glass pop bottles. The recycling money would be split between the two of us to buy whatever we wanted in the store. I would always get some kind of candy and a pack or two of baseball cards. Out of the 6 or 7 packs I bought I managed to pull a Strawberry RC. Not knowing the possible value of mint kept cards, mine got a little creased and all corners are rounded by now. It's still in my PC.
The color team logos on the back, with actual team colors, was a relatively new innovation; if they were in other sets from 1984 or prior I would like to know.
As I move toward more vintage cards working backwards i was able to pick up this complete set for less than a song and goes into the binder file.
Although I started collecting in '81, this set is one of my favorites. I love the square design, the block team names and the blue backs.
I always liked the blue card backs.
84' Topps were the first packs I bought when I was a kid with a few 84' Fleer packs. 1985 Was the first year I really started collecting as a kid though.
This was the first pack of cards I opened, when mom would go to the store my brother & sister would ask for her to bring back candy & I would ask for baseball cards...
This was the first set I collected.
My brother and I used to buy packs of 1984 Topps and Fleer cards for about 35 cents at 7-11, we also were able to get a large Slurpee that had the baseball motion coins on the bottom of the cup. We had tons of the cards and coins...I sure wish I had taken care of them back then. I could probably pay for some of my kids' college if I still had them. |
