Go-Go Gomez Hits Two Homers On Memorial Day

When I first introduced my wife Emma to baseball and the Minnesota Twins, she decided her favorite player was Carlos "Go-Go" Gomez. The first game we went to was against the Red Sox and we sat in the centerfield bleachers. Gomez was still learning the game, made a lot of mistakes but he was lightning fast. Although she eventually grew fond of Joe Nathan when Gomez was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, I think she still roots for him, although she often forgets where he now plays.

No longer platooning with Nyjer Morgan, the former Twin/ current Brewer is hitting .331 with 10 homers and 25 RBIs. Gomez leads the Brewers in dingers (one more now than all-star Ryan Braun) and in slugging percentage. Also, he's scored 28 runs, has 13 doubles and three triples in 48 games/175 at-bats. His walk to strikeout ratio isn't very good at nine walks and 42 K's but his on-base percentage is .376. Nice to see someone had some patience for him. BTW Nyjer Morgan is now playing in Japan.

Let's see, who did Billy Smith traded Gomez for again? Oh yeah, J.J. Hardy - who was traded to Baltimore soon after we got him along with Brendan Harris and a half million dollars for Jim "Hong Kong Phooey" Hoey and Brett Jacobson. Hoey (the "heir-apparent" to Joe Nathan) didn't pan out and was claimed off waivers by Toronto but is currently (and ironically) in the Brewers' farm system. Jacobson was released by the Twins after posting a 7.50 ERA in Double-A and signed by the Rockies where he's sucked even worst.
