Milestone Cards

by Billy Kingsley - 128 cards (Last updated on Jan 10, 2021)

1. 1995-96 Fleer #220 Sam Cassell

My very first NBA basketball card! Of the three major aspects of the hobby for me, the largest is by far the NBA, and it is also the only one where I know which card was #1. I don't even remember which set it was for NASCAR, and while I remember the sets for Non-Sports and others, the exact card is lost to history. I started collecting the NBA on 2/14/96, when my mom gave me a pack of cards for Valentine's day.

2. 2001-02 Topps Heritage #84 Elton Brand / Fred Hoiberg

As I approached 30,000 cards, I decided I would take note of which card it was. It turned out to be this one, and I reached that mark on 2/15/02, 12 years ago today, as I type this. I've documented adding over 45,000 cards to my collection since then, but this card remains the only time my all time favorite player, Elton Brand, appears on the Milestone Cards list.

3. 2001-02 SP Authentic #81 Desmond Mason

I did not record what cards were #31,000, 32,000 or 33,000, but I began to record the info regularly when I hit 34,000, which is this card, which I did on 5/21/02. 2002 through 2004 were the peak years of my collecting, and as you read through this list you will see the dates come by in rapid succession.

4. 1997-98 Fleer #238 Bubba Wells

#35,000 was achieved on 6/19/02.

5. 1996-97 Fleer #298 Jason Kidd

On July 9th, 2002, I found a now long closed shop who sold me a great many cards...I took in over 1300 new cards in one day, and about the same number of duplicates! Jason Kidd is my Mom's all time favorite player.

6. 1998-99 Bowman's Best #38 Allan Houston

This card was also added to my collection on 7/9/02.

7. 1996-97 Topps Chrome #172 Vitaly Potapenko

I also keep track of where the Monument cards come from, and this is the first, of only 2 on the list, (the next one is as well) that came from the first "local card shop" I went to, from 1993-2003 or 04, when the owner retired and closed the shop. This was card #38,000 and became part of my collection on 7/25/02. I added over 4,000 new cards in 5 weeks time. (I sure miss those days!)

8. 2000-01 Finest #97 Chris Webber

#39,000 arrived to me on 8/23/02.

9. 2002-03 Upper Deck Ovation #68 Anfernee Hardaway

Card #40,000 was the first of many to appear on this list from my current LCS, although by time I got this one, on 9/30/02, I had already been a customer of the shop for three years.

10. 2000-01 Upper Deck #286 Chris Porter

#41,000 was added to my collection on 10/17/02, 1 day before my birthday.

Wow I've never been that detailed with my acquisition of cards. Since around 2007 I have been a little bit detailed with my TCC (Trading Card Central - the first online forum site I joined) Blog <- My first card "blog" I'd have to check dates to see if it was my very first blog or my second. I have used that blog primarily for my maildays, but there have been a few times when I would go a few weeks or months without mentioning what I got. So I have many cards with untold stories I don't recall. In the last couple of years I have copied my posts from there onto my mailday post in TCZ (Trading Card Zone) so I would have two known copies in case TCC died out. Sometimes it has crashed for no apparent reason and it took a few days to recover.

Actually...I document the order of each and every card I get, in order that I get it, including the order it comes out of the pack...since January 1st, 2014. I wish I had done it sooner! It's fun, unless I get a LOT of cards, then it makes my hand hurt as I do it on paper. I also keep it on Excel but I don't wholly trust computers so I keep a hard copy as well. When I got the nearly 4000 cards in January, I kept them only on Excel.

Do you subtract when you trade or sell cards?  Could you hit a repeat milestone?

I don't subtract from my collection. Anything that leaves is a duplicate, which I don't count. Once I get a card, it stays with me forever.

Can't go wrong with Reggie Miller!  I actually entered that same card (109) into my collection here a couple days ago.

Glad I could add card #92,000 to your collection! Hopefully I will add a few more to your list along the way. Cheers!
