January 1993, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Retired in 1997 but returned in 2000. Retired for a final time in 2006 after being diagnosed with an atrial fibrillation.

In February 1999, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She died on 19 August 1999. She was the first active player in the WNBA to die.

On 16 November 1969, during a game in Atlanta, he was having difficulty breathing while playing. He voluntarily removed himself from the game, something he had never done. Upon returning to Chicago he was diagnosed with embryonal cell carcinoma. After two surgeries in April 1970, it was determined in early June 1970 the cancer had spread to numerous organs. He died 16 June 1970.

Former Sabres goaltender Clint Malarchuk came back from one of the most gruesome game injuries in sports history. A skate blade severed his carotid artery and jugular vein. Remarkably, he was back on the ice 10 days later.

Kevin Love recently made public his fight with anxiety.

Daniel Poncedeleon pitched in Spring Training with the Cardinals this year, a year after getting hit in the head by a line drive comebacker that required brain and skull surgery.

Korey Stringer died after a pre-season practice from heat stroke.

Ted Williams had his body frozen, so they can bring him back to life later. In the meantime, his head has fallen off. So he could potentially make this list at a later date.

Josh Harding was diagnosed with MS, but bounced back to win the Bill Masterson Trophy in the 2012-13 season and to record a .933 SV% in the 2013-14 season. However, that would be his last NHL season.
