Can someone help me to understand the VAR Background Player Variation?  There is only one card of the player, so not sure why there is a VAR.

Which card? I've been accused of being blind and also on my phone, but not seeing a card in the main checklist being labeled a VAR

I'm wondering if you're referring to the Changing Faces inserts. If that's the case, those are VARs because one player remains the same while the "background" player changes. A good example is

Cutler is the main player but the VARs are for John Elway (left) and Chris Leak (right) being in the background. Both of these cards are #9 so they're set up as two different VARs of #9 (a and b).

If that wasn't what you were looking for, though, please elaborate.

FreeHanSolo, these are the cards I am referring to.  I still don't understand why the VAR has to be stated.  There is only one set of players (Elway/Cutler or Leak/Cutler) so it doesn't make sense or seem to matter who is in the background.  I could understand that if there were cards where Cutler was in the background vs. the foreground.  So, I am still confused.

I think it's because there are two versions of each card with the same number. We generally don't list sets here with multiple cards #d 1, 2, 3, etc. We do the same with, say, Topps base sets where there's a regular base card plus a short print variation. Topps doesn't number them "9a" and "9b" so we need to differentiate them somehow in the checklists, plus the "VAR" note is nice because then members can get a nice list of all the cards with variations and what they are.

Yes, they are considered variations of each card number and "main player".

Shouldn't every single card in the set have a VAR then (for the Changing Faces sets)?

If I'm looking at the right sets, they do.

No, they don't have VAR in Note; only in Note2.

And the letters are in the numbers. These sets will need some TLC.
