In helping someone who has a few of the cards that cannot be found in the database, I have found that the insert sets' checklists we have here are either incomplete or divided up into too many sets. Problem is that finding all the facts of sets that were put out by a company that is now closed for business is difficult. The usual sources of information that I can find are just as messed up as here (or so it appears to me).
In this thread I am speaking of the 2003 Fleer Patchworks - National Patchtime. Here is what I have found out so far that I can ascertain:
Fact 1. We have these divided up in four sets:
National Patchtime Green 300: https://www.tradingcarddb.com/Checklist.cfm/sid/14785
National Patchtime Green 100: https://www.tradingcarddb.com/Checklist.cfm/sid/14784
National Patchtime Quality Control Replacements: https://www.tradingcarddb.com/Checklist.cfm/sid/177823
National Patchtime Quality Control Replacements 2: https://www.tradingcarddb.com/Checklist.cfm/sid/177826
They look like this:
Fact 2. Though we have two sets that specify "Green" they actually come in 3 colours: Green, Blue, and Violet.
Blue:
This same Adam Dunn card in Violet can be seen at: https://www.comc.com/Cards/Baseball/2003/Fleer_Patchworks_-_National_Patchtime_-_Violet/NPT-AD2/Adam_Dunn/9864956
Some are SN300 and some are SN100 (so far I can only ascertain that the Green version has a SN100 series).
Fact 3. Some of these cards were pulled from production in 2003 to be used in the Quality Control Replacements in 2004. We have some of these Quality Control cards listed at the two links above.
These first 3 Facts can be confirmed by anyone searching the internet (Beckett, COMC, and Baseballcardpedia).
What I can confirm as fact outside these sites is:
Fact 4. Their lists are not complete (nor are ours). A member here has a Jeff Bagwell card identical to these (in blue) SN300. No where can I find Jeff Bagwell in any list.
Fact 5. Our sets fall way short either by naming them "Green" (then we need identical sets in "Blue" and in "Violet") or we need to remove the colour designation of "Green" and expand the checklist to include the 3 colour versions.
Fact 6. Unless as a collector you acquired your card from Fleer as a "Quality Control Replacement", there is no way to tell that the card you have is from this so designated set. The back of the card shows "Fleer 2003" and has the same numberr designation of "NPT-XX2".
What I cannot confirm is whether the cards pulled for Quality Control Replacements included all of the cards produced of a particular player, i.e. were all of the Adam Dunn cards pulled and only acquired through mail in for replacement of damaged cards, or were some acquired in packs (if this is how they were distributed) and some held back for Quality Control. The only reference to these Quality Control "sets" is made by baseballcardpedia. Beckett and COMC (as far as I can find though I am not a regular user of these sites) don't differrentiate and have them all listed under 2003 Fleer Patchworks.
So what I am looking for from other members are FACTS. We all have opinions but unless you can confirm firsthand what you provide here, it will not help and probably end up in many contradictions.
1. If you own one or several of these cards and acquired it directly from Fleer (through its product distribution, i.e. in a pack) or by mail-in, can you confirm the name, complete #, SN, and colour of the card. If it is already listed in TCDB, can you provide a link to the card and if possible, scan and upload an image of it (all the sets are severely lacking images - the only image in our database is the Larry Walker above).
2. If you know of a reliable source of more information and more complete checklist, please provide a link or provide a checklist here for others to see (we will look to update what we have on the database once we determine more accurate info).
3. Questions to all of you: Should the cards be listed in the 4 sets we currently have? Should all three colours be grouped under one set? Should all SN300 and SN100 be in one set using the notes to differentiate? Should the Quality Control sets exist or should they be part of the 2003 sets (remember, once you have the card in your collection, there is no way to know where it came from and as I questioned before, were some in packs and some acquired by mail-in)?
For me, I don't see this search for information complete till we figure out where the Bagwell card fits in. Everyone's help in this endeavour is appreciated.
