1995 Maxx Racing Forum

Was there a licensing dispute with Richard Childress on this card?  Was it pulled early in production?  Is this an SP or SSP?  I see there are no cards in the base set for Dale Earnhardt, his car or commemorating any of his wins like the other drivers.  This is odd since there is a whole Chase the Champion insert set devoted to him.  Can anyone provide some insight for future collectors?  I see 3 people 'have' this card in their collection, but I wonder if they just clicked that they have the complete set and it added it.  I hope a scan of it gets uploaded.

Also, the Series 1 checklist card (#179) says #35 is a memorable moment card.

Interesting question, and one I can't find an answer to after more than a little digging (yes, jimetal, that was directed your way in case you were wondering). I was not able to find an image of that card anywhere, though Beckett lists it in their online checklist and nothing in the set notes indicates it was not issued. It also appears in the two paperback annuals I had handy, 2002 and 2004, and interestingly it was in the lowest priced group (.10) in '02 but had risen to the third tier (.40) by '04, while most of the other cards had not changed, so something is odd about it. Maybe Billy has the answer...

earnhardt did have his own company to control the use of his name and likeness, and was sold to action in 1996, so it wouldnt be surprising if somehow the upcoming transaction may have affected the card deal of 95

It throws the set numbers off because with this card, there are actually 271 cards. There are 2 card #179: Hut Stricklin's Car and a checklist. Funny thing is the checklist doesn't list Hut's car as 179 at all. It is like an extra card completely. I wonder if this card actually exists? 

The Action deal happened between 1994 and 1995. I suspect it has something to do with it. I wish my storage unit was more organized, it might be possible to dig up something in Beckett, Die Cast Digest or Winston Cup Scene, all of which I have...somewhere. 

I checked Les Haines' Earnhardt collection checklist, and card #35 is nowhere to be found.  He lists card #148 which has Eanhardt's car in the picture and card #203 which is of Earnhardt's crew cheif, but no #35.  I would say that if it was issued, it has nothing to do with Earnhardt or Richard Childress Racing.

It most likeley does not exist.

Billy gave me the idea to dig through some old Becketts my brother (Slugboy) had.  I believe I found it on Page 13 of the January 1996 issue where they wrote:

"We hope the following information from Maxx customer service supervisor Becky Price will help.

"According to Maxx, the company printed two card #'s 179.  Maxx intended card #179 to be a checklist, and did indeed print that card. However, the company also printed a Smokin' Joe card with the #179, though it should have been #160.

"To make matters more confusing, Maxx also misnumbered a card of the Burton brothers.  The card was supposed to be #35, but wound up as #160.  Consequently, no #35 card was printed.

"Because these mistakes were not corrected, collectors would have a complete Series I set if they have two different card #'s 179 and card #160 of the Burdon brothers."

An IR will be submitted to remove card #35 of this set.
