In 2011, I was near the end of a 6-year hiatus from modern card collecting (2007-2012), so I missed much of the 60th Anniversary hype surrounding the release of this set. I purchased a factory set in 2013, and tried waiting for the Update set to drop to $20. I passed on an opportunity to 'Buy it Now' for $25 shipped before the price sky-rocketed due to the popularity of Mike Trout. I did eventually find a 2011 Topps Update set for $25--but without the Trout card, of course. To this day, the Mike Trout card represents the only missing Topps Base or Topps Traded/Update set card that I'm missing from 1969-present. I'm stil waiting for the price to drop.
This set is full of pretty cool insert sets that I've collected like the '60 Years of Topps Lost Cards' Original Backs set featuring 10 cards that never were (but should have been). There's also the 'History of Topps' and 'Before There Was Topps' insert sets that are part of my collection. I've added most of the Factory Bonus Sets to my collection such as the All-Star, Limited Edition, and Team Bonus sets. I'm still waiting for a good price on the Retail Bonus set.
Overall, this is a really cool looking set design. I just don't think the 60th Anniversary was celebrated as well as the 50th or 40th Anniversaries, which displayed the emblem on the front of every card. Sure, you can purchase the Diamond Anniversary factory set, which came out after the regular season, but the majority of the packs and factory sets released throughout the year did not contain the logo. Also, because the there was a lot of foil on this set, getting the limited edition or diamond anniversary cards just added one more potential issue with the condition of your cards. Even with the regular version of these cards, I've found myself having to purchase multiple factory sets to replace bad foil stamping.
What are your thoughts on this set?
