There is an outstanding IR that I am trying to find an answer to. There is a card (sold out) on COMC that appears to be a Preview card from this set, but it doesn't match exactly. The card in question can be viewed here.
First, the player. Mike Devlin had four cards issued, and only three of them during his NFL career (2000 Topps base and two parallels). It seems unlikely that he would be included in a preview set (as BigEd76 notes in the IR).
Next, inconsistencies exist between this card and other Preview cards. For instance, this is a "First Quarter" card, but that is in foil at the bottom and not a small foil stamp like other First Quarter Preview cards. Additionally, other differences include Devlin's name being foil (note that other 1Q Previews have non-foil names) and the Cardinals helmet not foiled (while again, other 1Q Preview cards have foil helmets). The back of the Devlin is missing the word "Preview", as well as the biographical info present on other Previews - yet it has a write-up instead, like one might find on a base card. Really, the only consistency on the back is the numbering as "MD" (player initials).
There is a "Third Quarter" preview card of Peyton Manning, and it shares similar elements (foil subset at the bottom of the card, foil name, non-foil helmet, biographical write-up on reverse), but there are also inconsistencies here (Manning has "Preview" on the back as well as biographical details, not just a write-up, and the foil on the front is silver, not gold).
The Mike Devlin absolutely could be a Preview card for this set, but the inconsistencies are numerous so I'd like to be sure that we put this in the right spot.
I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.
