Personally it would be for preservation purposes. Most people because of the perceived value increase. Aside from doing it for the lulz, I've only sent things to get graded for preservation.

I can just imagine all the grading companies circling like vultures waiting to feast on the opportunity to grade this card when someone unearthed it from a pack.  The image of this card within the slab will be seen by many...free advertising for whoever graded it. I wonder what the upcharge was on this card or if the grading company waived it all entirely for the opportunity to be "the company" who had the opportunity to grade it.
